Match report A lacklustre and very disappointing fielding display cost Aspenden a game that they really should have won. Sapsford and Pankhurst bowled tidily with the new ball restricting Cloghams to three an over for the first 10 overs of the innings. A series of dropped catches allowed three Cloghams batsmen to score the bulk of their runs with their captain surviving numerous missed chances on his way to a hundred. Many Aspeneden heads dropped prematurely which only served to exacerbate the situation and most disappointingly proved to be the sides downfall as Cloghams' lack of depth was exposed in the last 10 overs of their innings. At tea the batting side would have settled for their 256 but in truth Aspenden were fortunate not to be chasing nearer 300.

Any optimism in the Aspenden ranks was soon dispelled as Strange went in the first over and was followed soon after by Yates. A short period of reconstruction followed as Booth dug in and Potter threatened great things. Unfortunately, it was not to be and both perished in the hunt for what was now an asking rate in excess of seven runs an over. Cameos from Lindsay and Baxter were encouraging but ultimately of little consequence as Aspenden failed to get anywhere near the Cloghams total finishing agonisingly close to a fifth batting point on 192.

The home side were left to reflect on the old adage that catches win matches and to ponder what might have been with a greater effort in the field. Aspenden must now turn their attention to next week's game against Little Hallingbury where they can aim to make amends and notch up their first league win of the season.
