Thriplow 2nds v Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team on Sat 06 Aug 2022 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won by 4 wickets

Match report A picturesque ground at Thriplow was the venue for the Asps latest conquest.

Thriplow won the toss and batted first. Steaming in down the hill was Steel & slinging it down the other end was D. Vincent. Steel started well as did Vincent. Thriplow played themselves in and after a solid start, started to find a few boundaries. Asps with just 10 men plugged the gaps as well as they could, but Thriplow started finding the gaps. It was Vincent who struck back for the Asps with the first ball of his 4th over when one of the openers got a leading edge straight into Cliftons hands at midwicket. With limited bowling in the Asps ranks, the bowlers were chopped and changed throughout the game. Vincent and Steel bowled great 4 over spells and were replaced by Baxter and Ricketts. Baxter started well with a maiden but not as well as Ricketts who got one to fly through, finding the edge and straight into Curtis' hands. Asps off to a great start. Baxter was bowling tightly and was rewarded when he got the remaining opener with one that slid through his defence. Ricketts could have had 2 more wickets but 2 edges fell short of Baxter at slip and flew to the boundary. Baxter was replaced by J. Vincent after 5 overs and immediately dismissed the Thriplow skipper for 1, a great catch by Clifton at deep midwicket. The pressure was on Thriplow, Asps fielding was fantastic, Worby, McNamara and new recruit Edwards were stand outs in the field and they threw themselves at everything for the team. Vincent's wicket meant it was drinks and the home team were on 69-4 after 19. J. Vincent continued with his leggies and bowled well. With the outfield like glass and Asps fielding with 10, anything off line was punished and rocketed along to the boundary. Ricketts bowled through for excellent figures of 1-30 off his 8, unlucky not to end up with a few more. D. Vincent took over from Ricketts to finish his 4 overs. Thriplow number 4 had played himself in well, a few lucky edges and some good cuts and pulls off J. Vincent saw him along to 50. His partner the other end was swinging at most deliveries, he hit 2 4's before D. Vincent took his middle stump to see him trundle off for 13. It was only 4 balls later when D. Vincent sent the Thriplow number 7 packing for 0, also having his middle stump taken out the ground. A double wicket maiden for young Vincent. With Thriplow now going for it in the final 10 overs, it was J. Vincent who took a bit of punishment. He bowled well but the number 4 was in and hitting it well. However he picked up his second of the day getting number 8 caught by Steel at mid on. A top spell under pressure from both Vincent's was a big highlight of the day. Daniel Vincent 8-0-38-4 & Jakey Vincent 8-0-54-2. Baxter and Steel finished off their spells and the innings. Baxter carried on bowling tightly finishing with 1-28 off his 8. Steel bowled well but with his pace, the ball flew to the boundary off Thriplows number 4's bat. A great run out from Worby off the final ball of the innings saw the hosts end on a solid score of 204/9 off their 40 with Thriplows number 4 scoring an inpressive 96*. A superb fielding effort saved Asps atleast 50 runs.

The familiar sight of Clifton and McNamara were out to open for the Asps. It only took 12 balls before McNamara was caught behind chasing a wide ball. After just two overs the task looked formidable for the Asps. The Thriplow openers were very good and were on the money every ball. Asps sat on just 11-1 after 8 overs. J. Vincent debuting at 3 had found the going tough but found the boundary twice in quick succession to ease some pressure. After a close LBW shout and a very angry Thriplow keeper calling umpires cheaters amongst other things, things were getting heated. Asps on the back foot and Thriplow in the ascendancy. J. Vincent was castled for 9 by the very impressive young opener. A very chirpy Thriplow were not expecting what was about to happen... Steel walked in at 4 and started beautifully when smashing the 1st change bowler back over his head for 6 then straight driving him for 4 the next ball. Clifton had seen off the openers well, but was adjudged LBW for a tough fought 23. D. Vincent was in at 5 with Asps sat at 60-3 after 20. 145 need off the last 20 it looked a tough ask with just 10 men. Vincent came out looking to hit runs quickly and he did. Some seriously impressive drives down the ground from Vincent and some power hitting from Steel was giving Asps a chance. Vincent hit a couple more straight drives before be was very well caught and bowled for 28 and a invaluable partnership of 76 between the pair had given Asps a real chance in this game. Worby came in next and Steel continued to hit 360 around the ground. Worby just passed the strike to Steel. Steel obliged and continued smashing the ball around, including a absolute monster 6 over midwicket and straight 6's down the ground. Worby chipped in with a couple of well placed 4's himself and Asps were looking like they may snatch the win. Worby was undone by a cracking yorker for a excellent 15 and partnership of 48 with Steel. Baxter came and went after a flying edge was plucked well by a deep wide slip. Curtis joined Steel with 22 needed. Curtis hit a lovely 2 and a single to give Steel the strike. A couple of lusty blows meant Asps were just 16 away from victory. Steel calmed the nerves with 2 6's to leave Asps 4 away from a fantastic win... he finished the game off in style by smashing one down the ground for 4. Steel ending 91*. His highest score for the club.

A fine performance from everyone. Both Vincent's with bat, ball and in the field. McNamara and Edwards were brilliant in the field and Worby aswell as his batting efforts. Curtis giving away 0 byes, Baxter and Ricketts bowling tight in the middle overs. Clifton with the bat also played a blinder. A real team performance. The win takes Asps upto 6th in the table with 4 to play. Abington away is next up.
