Cambridge NCI 3rds v Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team on Sat 16 Jul 2022 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won by 7 wickets

Match report A beautiful day at the ACG saw Aspenden playing 2nd in the league, Cambridge NCI.

A belting wicket saw Cambridge win the toss and have first use of it.

Surrey opened down the hill with a maiden and R. Fitzgerald followed with a tight over. Good early pressure was countered well by the NCI openers and runs started flowing. Fitzgerald tossed one up through the gate and the threatening opening partnership was broken on 43. Surrey had bowled well for no rewards and was replaced by Lewis Fitzgerald. Fitz started with an expensive couple of overs before finding his rhythm. Strange done well talking the remaining NCI opener out, a rush of blood to the head saw him race down the wicket and slap one straight to Surrey off R. Fitz. It wasn't long before R. Fitz had another when McNamara plucked one. R. Fitz spell was as brilliant as ever, picking up 3 for 30 off his 8. L. Fitz then took a great caught and bowled and NCI looked like they were in a spot of bother at 90/4. Baxter and Ricketts then bowled their 8 overs each for no rewards. The NCI middle order hit a 100 partnership in Baxter and Ricketts 16 overs. Baxter bowled tightly but gaps were found with ease and some good running saw NCI scoring freely. Ricketts bowled very well and was unlucky to walk away with nothing. It was Ricketts who did then change the game with a run out with a rocket arm from the boundary. Strange replaced Baxter, he was quickly into his work when Curtis had another stumping to his name, taking him to 101 for the club. Strange then got another when Baxter took a hard low catch on the 45. it wasn't long before he had his 3rd when Clifon took a good catch at midwicket. With the tail not wagging, NCI finished on a slightly above par score of 223. Strange and R. Fitz ending with 3 wickets a piece.

The chase started with Surrey and Clifton. After being dropped first ball, Surrey started whacking it to all parts. A couple of beautiful drives saw him race to 23 before being done by a slower ball. R. Fitz joined Clifton. The pair played sensibly whilst still scoring at a decent rate. Fitz was hitting it hard and Clifton nudging and nurdling 1's and 2's. Fitz smashed his way to 50 with some straight drives and 2 6's. Clifton wasn't far behind with his 50 and the pair put on 120. The real drama started when Asps needed 90 off the last 10. Fitz starting to really chance his arm and hitting boundaries to keep the Asps in contention. It was a big blow when he was bowled for a brilliant 73. L. Fitzgerald was up the order for a swing. Fitz, after a few singles then hit a solid straight 6. NCI skipper got his revenge when he bowled Fitz for an extremely valuable 19. Captain Baxter was next up with Asps needing 50 off 5. Clifton hitting some cracking 4's down the ground. Baxters first ball was clipped round the corner for 4 and followed by a single, leaving him on strike for the penultimate over. 26 needed off 2.. 1st ball of the over couldn't have gone better as Baxter launched the NCI opener high into the trees over cow and following it up with a 2, then another 4 down the ground. Buzzers then saw Baxter and Clifton run 3. 10 needed off the last over.. Baxter on strike, tried shuffling across but missed the ball.. the keeper also missed the ball and 4 byes was met by huge cheers from the pavilion. It was then Baxter who hit a 3 which left Clifton to deservedly smash the winning runs through midwicket with 2 balls to go.

A fantastic game of cricket played in good spirits. Enjoyed with many neck oils down the pub!

Special mention firstly to Bear and everyone else who out time and effort into sorting the pitch. Reece who bowled and batted brilliantly. Strange bowling the death overs well. Aaron who bowled well for no reward. Clifton for a batting through and leading Asps to victory. Baxter and L. Fitz for their valuabke cameos and big hitting. Also Bert for the 2 jugs of neck oil at the pub.
