Madingley 2nds v Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team on Sat 21 May 2022 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won by 18

Match report Aspenden travelled to Cambridge to play Madingley at a picturesque ground.

Baxter won the toss and Asps were going to set a score. Steel and McNamara opened up and after a steady 5 overs, Steel opened his arms and clipped a nice looking 6 over long off. McNamara looked comfortable and picked up the singles where he could. Steel soon fell for 15 though, being bowled by the impressive Madingley opener. R. Fitzgerald was in at 3 and along with McNamara, guided the Asps to drinks at 60-1. A beautiful looking pitch was deceptive, it was hard to score runs on and some good bowling made it harder. Fitz picked the run rate up a bit after drinks. Hitting a big 6 over midwicket. A couple more nice shots from Fitz saw him score 28 when he was bowled. McNamara still holding up an end, was joined by J. Vincent. McNamara freed his arms and hit 2 lovely 4's down the ground before being bowled for an important 18. D. Vincent joined his brother and the pair pushed the run rate along. J. Vincent hit 2 very nice 4's and when he was caught for 13, D. Vincent took over the scoring and hit some cracking shots around the ground. Contributions from L. Fitzgerald (5) Morrissey (7) and Surrey (6) were to come in hand for the Asps. But it was young D. Vincent who smashed his way to 30 who gave Asps the momentum. Asps finishing on 136-6. A low looking score but on a tough pitch.

Asps had something to defend and they went about it brilliantly from the start! Steel bowling absolute rockets, was unlucky not to have one in the first over when Baxter just didn't react in time and couldn't take the edge. But it wasn't long before he was in the book! Ricketts taking a grab at gully in Steels 2nd over. R. Fitzgerald opened up the other end and gave the batsmen no rest bite. When Fitz did bowled a short ball, it was slapped to D.Vincent who plucked a brilliant catch at deep square leg. R. Fitz was back in the game when he bowled an absolute beautiful ball that drifted out then spun in to take the off stump of the batsmen. Things got even better when the ferocious Steel banged in a short ball that found the batsmans top edge and Ricketts took a fantastic one handed backwards diving catch at gully. Madingley 9-4 soon became 12-5 when Fitzgerald bowled another one middle stump. Steel bowled 5 quality overs and was replaced by Surrey. Surrey started well, swinging it into the batsmen pads. He was soon rewarded when he took a good caught and bowled chance and Madingley reeled at 19-6 off 11 overs. Fitzgerald bowled his 8 overs, he ended with 3-19. Strange replaced him and found some turn from the start. The moment of the day was Strange getting one to grip and spin past the onrushing batsmans edge and Baxter to pick up the stumping for Stranges 750th Aspenden wicket. An amazing achievement. The next 20 overs were hugely uneventful apart from a couple of dropped catches. The two Madingley batsmen played well and took them to 30 overs needing to go at 9 and over to win. Some top bowling from Ricketts and D. Vincent kept Asps in control. With Madingley needing 21 off the last over, Ricketts bowled the batsmen first ball of the over. Ricketts bowled the last over for just 2 runs and a wicket. Brilliant death bowling and ASPCC walk away with all 20 points and their first league win of the season.

Special mention to Strange getting his 750th wicket, Daniel Vincent for his batting, bowling and catch. Ricketts for his last over and Steels bowling that got him 3-7 off 7.

A great team victory and the kick start the Asps needed.
