Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team v North Weald on Sat 23 Apr 2022 at 1.00pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won By 22 Runs
Match report
The ACG was the venue for the Asps first game of the season. A friendly V North Weald.
Baxter won the toss and elected to bat. It looked a good decision with openers Gurney & Clifton starting well & both timing nice shots through covers & down the ground. Gurney hit 5 4's on his way to 25 before he was bowled, ending a great opening partnership of 51. Clifton followed soon after to the left arm spinner when he patted one back for 19 & was Ct & Bowled. J. Vincent joined last seasons in form man R. Fitzgerald & the pair looked comfortable at the crease. R. Fitz looked like he was starting off where he left last season, timing the ball nicely & building an innings. J. Vincent looked settled & also playing himself in. Ginn bowled tightly & finished with a deserved 1-0 off 4 overs, very well bowled. Vincent hit a good 4 through midwicket before chipping one to mid-on for 7. D. Vincent joined Fitz but sadly was out for 1 & another ct & bowled. McNamara was next to the crease & looked solid from the start. Fitz was going along nicely & smashed a huge 6 into the field. Fitz also clubbed two cracking 4's down the ground until he was ct & bowled by a very good catch for a well-made 34. McNamara hit some nice shots on his way to 8 but he was adjudged LBW & L. Fitzgerald was stumped soon after for 5. Baxter & Curtis were in to face the final few overs & with Asps struggling to post a good total, Baxter managed to hit 3 quick 4's before being bowled in the last over, Surrey came in & smashed a 4 & Asps ended 154-9. A below par score but something to defend.
The usual pairing of L. Fitzgerald & Surrey opened for Asps. Both bowling tightly & gave nothing away. Surrey found the NW skippers edge numerous times with no luck. It was L. Fitz who got him in the end, off a top edge to Gurney who took a high catch. The game turned when NW number 3 came in. Fitz was replaced by Ricketts down the hill, he started on a good line, getting some movement out of the pitch. Surrey bowled a great spell of 6-2-15-0 that deserved a wicket. NW number 3 made his intentions clear when he hit Ricketts back over his head for 6. J. Vincent replaced Surrey & flighted it well. The remaining opener was blocking Vincent & charging Ricketts a couple of times. Vincent was bowling well but NW no 3 smashed anything short for 6 & clubbed his way to 50. R. Fitz replaced Vincent & got a run out when no 3 smashed it down the ground & Fitz got fingertips to it onto the stumps. L. Fitz was bought back in to try & take the big wicket, but he got the treatment from the in man as well. R. Fitz picked up a wicket ct by Ricketts well at short fine leg, then in the same over he then got No 3 out bowled, cramping him for room & sneaking one through. 100-1 had gone to 120-4 in no time. It then became a procession for R. Fitz! He picked up wicket after wicket tearing through the middle order. L. Fitz had completed his 8 over spell for good figures of 8-2-24-1. D. Vincent was the 3rd left arm seamer of the day was next down the hill & he bowled very well. Soon R. Fitz had his 5 for & bought up the first jug of the season. R. Fitz finished 8-3-7-5, incredible figures. Baxter & Vincent finished up the innings, both picking up a wicket each. Vincent finished 6-1-16-1, a great spell at the death from the youngster.
Asps win by 22 runs.
A good run out for the Asps to start the season and plenty to build on.
