Stevenage 4ths v Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Sunday XI on Sun 26 Apr 2009 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won 40 runs

Match report On a beautiful day in Stevenage, ASPCC recorded their first win of the season with a fine all round performance against Stevenage. Batting first Michael Strange and Rob Devonshire put on 40 for the first wicket before Devonshire was caught behind. Sapsford didn't last long, caught at point for a duck, but Luke Clifton joined Strange and pushed the scoring along. Strange retired at 53, which led to a slowing down of the scoring rate before Clifton opened up and retired on 50. Baxter hit a quickfire 26 but ASP then lost 4 wickets in 2 overs and finished on 163-9. In reply Stevenage got off to a steady start before upping the tempo against the change bowling. They reached 103-1, before a mixture of great bowling and suicidal running meant they crumbled to 123 all out, with Baxter taking 4-26, and Ward, recovering from a poor start, 2-41. Skipper John Albon came on and swept the tail away with 2-5.

An excellent first win of the season for ASPs, and a good example of how you must stay in the game and believe you can win, even when it may appear to be getting away. Most pleasing of all was that all three areas of the game were executed to a high standard. Having chose to bat on a beautiful sunny afternoon, and with both Bear and Clifton making the required 50 before retiring, a brilliant platform was built with other good contributions from Clark (26) and Bert (11) pushing the ASPs to 163 for 9 off their 40 overs. 180 was more than in focus but sadly the tail failed to wag and allowed a young Stevenage bowler to take five wickets. Taking the field, the ASPs knew that a tight bowling and fielding performance was required and they didn’t let skipper Albon down. Early excellent stops from Ward and Bear set the tone, and fantastic tight bowling from Thompson (8 overs for 25) and Sappo (6 overs for 22) restricted Stevenages early batsman. Baxter and Ward were then introduced to the attack and Stevenage saw their opportunity to chance their arms. Despite some lusty hitting the two slow bowlers found their lines and started taking wickets, Clark particularly impressing with 4 for 30. When Ward finished his spell (2 for 41 off 8), Albon brought himself on to bowl and took a wicket first ball. After a comic run out from the increasingly desperate batsman, Stevenages only not out 50 maker strode back to the crease. It was vital now that we kept him away from the strike and the fielders here did a great job, up and back to restrict the scoring and ensure we bowled at the batter we wanted too. Eventually he holed out to Sapsford at mid wicket giving Albon his second wicket and securing the win for the ASPs.
