Nazeing Common v Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Sunday XI on Sun 21 Jun 2009 at 2pm

Match report
On a beautiful sunny afternoon in rural Essex, ASPs young guns achieved a more than creditable draw against hosts Nazeing Common Sunday 1sts. Harry Pearman returned to the side after several seasons away and El President also made a welcome appearance. After a contrived toss, ASPs got half what they wanted and were in the field, although the nature of the game, a “time” affair, wasn’t to everyones tastes.
Wardy opened the bowling and looked to continue his good work from the previous week, with young Lew Fitz steaming down the hill from the other end. It soon became clear that Nazeing had a decent young batsman looking to make hay in the sunshine, but at no point did the opening ASPs pair, or indeed Clark who followed after Lews opening maximum spell, allow him to get away. Sadly we did give him a couple of lives on his way to 141. With a big fast outfield and opposition players encouraged to chance their arms there were some runs to be had but lengthy spells from Albon (2 for 52 off 11) and Si Lindsay (3 for 69 off 11) ensured that the Nzeing score didn’t get as high as might have been feared. The returning Lew Fitz picked up a wicket late on and was rewarded with excellent figure of 7-0-23-1.
Fittingly on Fathers Day, our very own Father Son opening duo Gordon and Bert got the ASPS innings under way and built a useful opening stand until Bert fell for 16. This brought HP to the crease but his stay was short and a very hungover Clumpers strolled out to the wicket to join Gordon with a partnership needed. Thankfully this was built slowly and surely (some of the slowness owing to not wanting the girl to get them out) until Gordon was unfortunately run out for 28 going for a tight two. Big hitting Baxter strode out at number 5 and proceeded to a very well constructed 55 which was the mainstay of the ASPs total. Other contributers Neil (12) and Si (10) came and went and it was left to Lew Fitz (3*) to finish the innings off.
