Chrishall v Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Sunday XI on Sun 23 Aug 2009 at 2pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Lost 4 wickets
Match report
ASPs Sunday boys fell to a narrow defeat on a scorching hot day over at Chrishall where once again the condition of the ground was a major talking point. A green wicket and cut grass over half the outfield meant bowlers would always be in the game on a day when usually batsmen would have been licking their lips.
Thankfully for him, Albon called incorrectly at the toss and the decision was taken by Chrishall to field first. The opening salvo from H P-T vindicated the decision to open with ASPs two most experience batsmen, and despite a diet of short fast bowling, Bear and Clumpers rarely looked troubled against bowling they rated as league class. It took a while, but the second and third line Chrishall bowling couldn’t quite keep the pressure going and runs began to flow, especially from Bearskis’ Warsop, and he went to 50 with shots through midwicket and point. Clumpers was giving able support but he was undone by one from the younger P-T and bowled for 32. Alex Cassells took the initiative and began brightly, a lofted drive a highlight of his 19 not out. Bear went through the 90’s at speed and got to his ton with another well struck four. ASPs 195 for 1 at the interval, a long wait In his pads for Baxter!!!!!
After an excellent tea, the ASPs boys took to the field in the rapidly setting evening sun. The two Lewis’, Fitzgerald and Robinson, opened up and were quickly finding some movement. Some lusty hitting early from JLC got Chrishall above the rate but chances were coming with the unfortunate Wardy dropping two chance at deep gully, one each off the two Lews. An excellent spell from Fitzy was rewarded with a wicket, but Robbo didn’t have the same fortune in his 8 overs. Several bowling changes couldn’t halt the runs, with both Reece Fitz and Wardy going at over 5 an over, Chrishall were always in the game. Albon brought himself and Tank on at the 22 over mark and despite both taking 2 wickets (2 for 36 and 2 for 32 respectively), neither could gain the control or bowl the key over the ASPs needed and the total was reached with only a handful of balls remaining in the game. Mention should be made of a great running diving catch from Wardy, the ball sticking in the crocodile jaws to the equal delight and surprise of all involved!!!!!
