Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team v Ashwell on Sat 01 Aug 2020 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Lost By 36 Runs

Match report A beautiful day at the ACG saw ASPCC play their first game in the CCA leagues. Ashwell were the visitors and Baxter inserted Ashwell into bat after winning the toss.

A quick start saw Ashwell take runs off both Surrey & Morss. Surrey unlucky after finding the edge twice early and very tough, low catch just did not stick for Curtis keeping. 4 overs in and Morss struck to get his 1st wicket for the club when Surrey nabbed a flick to him at short fine leg. Ashwells remaining opener was still going strong & Greenbank who was known to the Asps, a good cricketer joined him at 3. The pressure was being put on the Asps with regular boundaries and quick singles. It was a quick single that was to be the changing point & moment of the game… Young Jake Vincent on his Asps debut, picked up a well hit drive in cover and a brilliant direct hit saw Greenkbank on his way. A brilliant bit of fielding by the lad on debut. Surrey finished his spell of 0-31 off his 6, unlucky not to walk away with a wicket. Baxter replaced him and bowled tightly early on. Morss finished off well with 2 maidens in his last 3 overs. A good return for his first game in 4/5 years! 1-31 off his 8. Strange was back in action for the first time this season, replacing Morss up the hill. It was Baxter who carried on from Vincents good work. He struck with an LBW two overs before drinks. Two balls after drinks and the remaining opener advanced down the pitch and hammered one back over Baxters head who threw his hand up and plucked it for a very good catch. Things got even better when two balls later Baxter turned one through a big gate and Ashwell had lost 3 quick wickets. Strange struck next over and 3 became 4. Asps were getting on top and Ashwells Skipper released some pressure hitting both Baxter and Strange for some lusty blows. Unfortunately for Ashwell wickets fell around him & after Baxter finished a decent spell of 3-31 off his 8, Fitzgerald struck in first and only over and Strange finished proceedings off the next over. A good return of 3-37 for Strange on his first game in 2020. Ashwell finishing on a slightly below par 144 all out.

A quick turn around saw McNamara and Fitzgerald open up. The opening bowling was tight, and Asps hopes took a big blow when top batsmen Fitzgerald played on early for 1. McNamara was looking in fine form & Strange joined him at the crease. McNamara faced about 95% of the balls in their 8 over stint together. Strange who had still barely faced a ball, swiped at a wide one and was caught by a juggling keeper on the 2nd attempt. Albon was in at 4 and struck a good 4 before being caught at short cover. Shortly after McNamara was adjudged LBW for well-made 21. Ashwells opening bowler English, had obliterated the Asps top order taking 4-29 off his 8 over spell. The change of bowling saw more wickets tumble. N. Curtis had looked comfortable at the crease, hitting it well, but he was bowled by one that stayed low for 8. Morrisey also looked happy at the crease and was blocking well, taking the singles well and had hit a boundary. Vincent had joined him, and nothing seemed to be troubling him either. Sadly, Vincent pushed down the wrong line to one that just moved into him and bowled him for 3. Baxter joined Morrisey and Asps were floundering at 53-6. The pair put on 15 to steady the ship slightly before Morrisey was stumped for 10. Great to see I. Curtis returning to the side and he was next in, sadly he chipped one up for just 1. Morss was in at 10 and looked comfortable. Baxter took most the strike and with lots of time in the match left, took no real risks and just scored off the bad balls. The pair put on 20 before Morss was bowled for 1. Surrey was last man in, and he provided probably the best shot of the day when he drilled a beautiful straight drive down the ground for 4. He also hit two more 4’s on his way to 12 not out. Asps tiny glimmer of hope vanished when Baxter missed a straight one trying to clip it to leg and was out for 19. Leaving Asps falling 36 runs short.

Congrats & welcome to Bernie Morss & Jake Vincent on making their debuts for the club. Morss picking up his first wicket for the club & Vincent with a stunning bit of fielding.

But overall a disappointing day overall for the Asps, who will be looking to improve next week when they travel to Bassingbourn hoping for a change of fortunes.
