Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team v Theydon Bois I on Sat 10 Jun 2017 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won by 8 wickets
Match report
A bright day at the ACG saw Aspenden play Theydon Bois.
A beautiful looking pitch, thanks to Bear & Bert for their hardwork, saw Asps field first. L. Fitzgerald started down the hill & the ever improving Devonshire up the hill. Both started well and Fitz after a early ct & bowled chance put down, made up for that by taking a ct & bowled the next over. Both bowlers were bowling tight lines and very few freebies. This quality bowling was carried on when Albon replaced Devonshire, 6-0-22-0, after a good opening spell from the paceman. Albon had a good looking number 3 caught by Worby with a terrific catch at mid on about a inch form the ground. Brilliant catch, big wicket & some top bowling. It was all going smoothly for the Asps. Fitzgerald bowled his 10 overs, 1-44... That is not the full story though.. He had 3 drops off his bowling.. The less said about ASPCC's catching the better. R. Fitz replaced his brother down the hill. With Theydon looking in trouble, their big left hander took R. Fitz for a big over including 2 sixes and 2 fours. Albon still bowling well picked up his 2nd in figures of 9-2-28-2, another top spell from the Asps spinner. TB's lefty was backing away and heaving everything over midwicket. He reached 50 in about 20 balls and had put TB in a much better position. Strange had replaced Albon and wickets tumbled. Fitz got his man and give him a friendly send off. With Fitz's confidence up he bowled a beautiful spell. Bowling 3 maidens in his last 5 overs and picking up a second wicket. Strange's quality was shining through. The TB batsmen weren't good enough to get bat on ball. Some good catching, a stumping and all round good bowling saw Strange go to his and Aspendens first 5 for of the year, and Strange's 21st 5 wicket haul of his Asps career. Strange did leave time for Baxter to bowl an over and be slapped for 6 back over his head... Then Strange got his 5th... A great team effort from Aspenden saw Theydon Bois restricted to 167 A/O.
One of the teas of the season was followed by one of the chases of the season so far for Asps. The target was not massive but the chase was timed perfectly & in control from the start. Jabar took first ball and Clifton joined him at the other end. Jabar hit a brilliant cover drive then walked when he tickled one down leg side to the keeper the next ball for 9. Ward joined Clifton early on. Both men played their own game, Ward losing a ball after a massive 6 and Clifton pushing the 1's & 2's all around the ground. Clifton did hit some boundaries of his own, including a couple of clips down to a vacant fine leg. When TB bought third man up and fine leg back, Clifton found the third man boundary with some well placed shots. Ward was steaming along, blocking a good one then smashing a good one for 6. Ward was hammering the ball through the offside, piercing the field on several occasions. Ward was quickly taking the game out of the reach of Theydon and was soon at 50. He went on to hit another 17 to reach a top knock of 67. Ward's second highest league score for the Asps. R. Fitz joined Clifton and some good bowling to the new bat saw the run rate decrease. Asps were getting slightly bogged under until Fitz decided enough was enough and came down the crease to hit 2 cracking cover drives for 4 and a cut for 4 in quick time. Clifton also joined in the fun and hammered a 4 through cover and one through midwicket. Clifton soon reached his 50 and it wasn't much longer until the game was won. Clifton let loose and hit 3 more fours on his way to 63* and a top effort from R. Fitz to stay till the end for his 23*. Brilliant performance from the ASPS lads.
Special mention to Jonny A, Bear & Lew Fitz for all reaching double figures for league wickets in this game. Kal's aggressive 67 and Cliftons well made 63*.
