Match Report 2nd July Aston Away
A late fixture change saw Aspenden travel to Aston for a thriller.
Albon's men were in the field first. Things started brightly when Albon had a fantastic low diving caught and bowled in the first over, a super effort. Ward struggled with the slope the other end, and the hard hitting Number 1 climbed into some short and wide balls. Debutant Long replaced Ward and Albon caused problems for the batsmen. Aston going along nicely and the 50 partnership was bought up quickly. Baxter replaced Long, who was unlucky to go without a wicket. Baxter picked up a wicket in his first over and sadly that brought the brutal number 4 out to bat. He, along with the remaining opener, found the boundaries with regularity. Baxter was taking the brunt from the hard hitting number 4. Anything not full and straight was thumped over midwicket for 6. Both batsmen brought up 50's and Asps looked as if they would be chasing well over 250. Baxter had the number 4 stumped after some quick work from Curtis with the gloves. Ward picked one up bowled middle stump. Ward finishing 1-35 and Baxter 2-65... Young Gurney was now bowling after Ward. He produced the spell of the day. Pegging back Aston and restricting the run rate, bowling perfect line and length throughout his 8 overs. Ward took a good catch off Gurneys bowling. Gurney then had the set opener out for 84, after another top bit if glove work had him stumped. Gurney finished 2-40 off his 8. A top spell from the young man, including a prize wicket. It was left to Sapsford to bamboozle the last two Aston bats with some huge turning deliveries. After getting one in his first over and almost cracking a smile, Sapsford finished off the Aston innings when bowling the last man.
Aston ending on 215 AO.
Sapsford opened up with Moor but an early top edge to cover saw him out for 2. Worby came in at 3. Sadly after looking solid, some small confusion saw Worby just run out for 1. Grace joined Moor at 4. Grace looked good and had no problems seeing the ball onto the bat. Asps 20/2 off the first ten saw Aston in control. The first bowling change saw Moor smash a huge 6 over midwicket followed by a straight 4. Grace joined the fun, hitting a straight 4 in the same over. A bit of momentum for the Asps. Moor gave nothing away and found gaps all round the field. Grace was in also finding some quick singles. Aspenden started to look like they were getting a grip on the game again when Moor bought up his 50. Grace perished for a vital 19 when he edged behind. Curtis joined Moor and a fine 50 partnership followed. Moor clubbing it to all parts now, but the Aston skipper had pushed the whole field out and he could only get 1's. The occasional brutal hit found the boundaries and kept Asps alive. Aston bring the field up to Curtis and bowling tight lines. Moor was now hit out or get out. Smashing 4's and bringing up his first 100 of the season! A great effort from Trigger Moor. With Asps needing 50 off the last 7 things we're looking hard when Moor was bowled for the 106. Big hitting Baxter joined Curtis and immediately found the midwicket boundary. Curtis hit his way to a good 21 before he was bowled. Gurney joined Baxter who was racing along. Gurney hit arguably the shot of the day when he leant forward and drove a delightful 4 back over the bowlers head. Baxter then hit a 6 and two 4's in the next over to give Asps a sniff. Gurney hit another 4 before sacrificing himself for Baxter to be on strike the last over. Gurney gone for a good 10. With all the Aston fielders on the boundary, Asps needed 10 off the final over to win. Baxter and Albon managed 7 which wasn't enough to win the game.
A good game against good oppo, enjoyed with a beer after.
Special mention to Liam Gurneys bowling who delivered under a lot of pressure. And Michael Moor's fantastically entertaining 106. A top effort lads.
Asps play Hockerill and home in the league Saturday and our annual Presidents game at the ACG Sunday.
