Hockerill v Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Sunday XI on Sun 11 Jun 2017 at 2.00pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won by 2 wickets

Match report A strange game saw Aspenden travel to Hockerill for the second time this season after ASPCC saturday team won against Hockerill's on the first game of the season.

Skipper Albon won the toss and elected to bowl first. ASPCC were on top from the start. Albon opened up with P. Ward. It was Ward who got the early breakthrough when the opener smashed one to Baxter at mid on who took a good catch. Albon was bowling well but without reward. Ward however was getting plenty of rewards for hitting a good length. Ward had two more quick wickets then a tremendous fourth, when Hockerill's Saturday 1sts league player was bowled all over the shop by Ward. Albon was replaced by Surrey who bowled well and got a nick behind to N. Curtis who took a sharp catch. The damage had been done by Ward who obliterated the top order with figures of 8-2-25-4. Incredibly unlucky not to get his first 5 wicket haul after Asps fielders dropped three catches off Wards bowling... A rusty Hughes replaced Ward and struggled with line and length from the start. Hughes was punished by a big hitting lower order batsmen for several boundaries. A few overs later Hughes found his areas and had the big hitter out ct and bowled. Next ball Hughes picked up his second and was a whisker away from a hattrick!I. Curtis came on to absolutely demolish the lower order and tail. Curtis picked up 3 wickets in 2 overs to finish the innings off. Asps bowled fantastically to restrict Hockerill to just 104 A/O.

Tea was followed by a confident Asps team sitting back waiting for the runs to be knocked off... It wasn't going to be that simple..

Hockerill opened up with their 1st team opening bowler, who had already bagged 4 wickets in the earlier league game. He looked good and persistent. It paid off when he bowled Poulton for 5. The remaining opener R. Fitz looked quality. Some cracking drives and flicks saw him race to 20, sadly he was also bowled by the Hockerill quick. K. Ward LBW 5, N. Curtis bowled 1, both fell quickly to leave Asps reeling at 30-4. I. Curtis and Surrey got together to steady the ship. Surrey chancing his arm to hit 4 quick boundaries in his 20 before playing on for. Surrey had put Aspenden back in the drivers seat for the time being... I. Curtis hit 2 lovely cover drives for 4 before he was gone for 10. Albon and P. Ward negotiated 5 good overs and scored slowly but keeping the wickets in hand. Sadly after some good resistance Ward was cleaned up for 4. Clifton joined Albon and both batsmen scored a couple of boundaries each to get Asps within 10 runs of victory... But then Clifton miscued a beamer (no ball) straight to midwicket who took a catch. Baxter joined Albon and hit the winning runs through midwicket to keep the mighty ASPCC unbeaten on Sundays in 2017.

Special mention to all the bowlers. All picked up wickets and kept it tight.
