Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Sunday XI v Hare St & Hormead on Sun 07 May 2017 at 2.00pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won 13 Runs
Match report
The ACG was rocking for a local Derby against Harestreet & Hormead. The Asps were put into bat and R. Fitz opened up with Albon. Fitz played some classy shots in the first two overs and opened his account quickly. Albon looked solid and knocked the 1's and 2's around the ground. Fitz smashed 2 sixes on his way to a quick well made 50. Albon joined in hitting a couple of sweep shots for 4 through square leg. With both batsmen looking set for the day, the 100 partnership was soon up. HS & H bought on 2 good bowlers in the Caine brothers. Jack bowled with pace but was thwarted by Fitz and his late dab shot to keep the scoreboard moving along. Both batsmen were creeping towards personal milestones, Fitz bought up his first of many Apsenden 100's with a Vitara Brezza glam shot... Green was in at 3 after Fitz retired 100*. With only a few overs left the batsmen were looking to score quickly and Albon played a great sweep through midwicket off S. Caine to bring up his maiden Asps 50, he was Ct soon after for 58. Green was joined by Houghton, Houghton saw the ball nicely from his first and some good running with Green saw Houghton hit a quickfire 9 and Green 4, before Houghton was bowled and Green ct. Worby and Curtis scored 5 off the last over leaving ASPCC 197-3 off their 40 overs.
After a Ceat strategic time out (teas) the returning Rushworth opened the bowling up the hill and Baxter down. Rushworth was pushing the ball right up to the stumps and causing the opening batsmen to play defensive. Baxter struggled with length early on but soon got into the groove. Rushworth picked up his and Aspendens first when he bowled D. Fitz. Rushworth then picked up the second opener who hauled out. Ward & McNamara were 3 and 4 for HS & H. McNamara looked to keep the bowlers out and pass strike to Ward. Ward hit Baxter & Rushworth for some quick boundaries but Baxter picked up Ward when he miscued one to Strange at mid wicket. A big wicket for the Asps boys, but with L. Fitz and both Caine boys to bat, the game was very much in the balance. Baxter ended with 1-38 & Rushworth 2-29, a solid start from both teams. S. Caine was going well and hitting the ball cleanly, Golden arm Grace was on for Rushworth & The ever improving Gifford had replaced Baxter, and was causing problems for the batsmen. A tight few overs were played out well and something had to give, and it did when golden arm picked up Caine. Next in was Jack Caine and he looked solid from his first ball. Gifford bowled a good spell of 0-30 and Green came on for him. HS & H needed 50 off the last 10 with 6 wickets left. The game took a big turn when Worby was introduced to the attack. Worby started off with a maiden then picked up the wicket of Caine. HS & H skipper L. Fitz was in next. Worby picked up another and Asps came together to get a run out. Fitz put Green over the boundary rope a couple of times to keep HS & H as favourites. 20 need off 5 and Green picked his first up followed by Worby bowling L. Fitz and middle stump! Worby then finished the game off getting number 11 caught by R. Fitz. ASPCC clinched a thrilling 13 run victory. A great game played in great spirit.
Special mention to Reecey's 100, Johns 50 and Worby's 4-12! Top effort by all.
