Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team v Nazeing Common on Sat 04 Jun 2016 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won by 8 Wickets
Match report
On a overcast day, and with a damp wicket to contend with, unbeaten table toppers Nazeing Common were the visitors to the ACG. After a week of rain, the groundsmen did a fine job of getting the pitch and outfield looking in decent shape, and Clifton won the toss and inserted Nazeing. Tight bowling from Fitzgerald and Surrey put the pressure on early doors, with Surrey bowling Blair with a peach of a delivery. Rivers didn't trouble the scorers as he leading edged Fitzgerald to a diving Ward at mid off. Crowley was struggling to score at the other end, as he was too busy telling us how Nazeing have got covers and how dare we produce a wet wicket!! Reese started strongly, but mistimed a pull from Strange's second ball to be caught at midwicket. The next batsman was caught behind by Baxter off Ward before Strange snaffled a low slip catch off the same bowler to dismiss Stevens, leaving Nazeing in the mire. A counter attack from Barker pushed the score along quickly, being particularly severe on Strange, before an inspired bowling change saw Humphrey have Barker caught behind. Crowley was plodding along and reached 50 before being caught and bowled by Ward, and it was left to Sapsford and Humphrey to clean up the rest with Nazeing finishing on 140 all out. A few moans about the pitch, but the bounce was even, it was just a bit damp, and if you can't adjust, then just play home games!! After a cracking tea, Jabar and Clifton strode to the crease, and looked in good touch as Jabar took the younger Stevens for a 4 and a 6 in his second over. Clifton looked a man reborn as he played some delightful cuts and drives, and ASP were cruising along at 4/5 an over. The introduction of Stevens the elder caused a few alarms, but Jabar played him beautifully, causing him to lose his rag a couple of times!! Jabar moved quickly to 50, with Clifton backing him up well. The partnership reached 122 before Clifton was dismissed, and with Humphrey picking up a third ball duck, Nazeing amazingly thought they were in the game. But this threat was soon snuffed out by the imperious Jabar, as he moved serenely onto 84* and ASP won the game with 12 overs to spare. Probably our best all round performance of the year, bowling and fielding were excellent, and Jabar was just sublime with the bat.
