Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Sunday XI v Pirton on Sun 24 Apr 2016 at 2.00pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won by 143 Runs

Match report Sunday saw another home game for Aspenden against a Pirton side who gave ASPS a very good competitive game on the last day of the 2015 season. Albon lost the toss and was put into bat. A new opening pair of Ward and Clifton strode out to the middle. Ward hit a nice straight 4 in the 2nd over before being caught and bowled by one that just popped up on him for 5. Baxter was in at 3 and joined Clifton. Some tight bowling saw Aspenden scoring at just 3 an over for the first 10 and also some good fielding from Pirton saved a lot of runs. Both batsmen were content with finding the singles. Baxter then found the gap smashing one through the covers. Clifton soon followed when he hit two straight fours back down the ground. Both batsmen had put on a good partnership and soon after drinks Baxter reached 50. Clifton followed a couple of overs later, scoring back to back 50’s over the weekend. A great way to start the season. Baxter then freed his arms hitting the Pirton bowlers for a few boundaries and a well timed 6. With 5 overs left both batsmen were going for it. Baxter then fell LBW for 90. With Baxter and Clifton putting on a 178 run partnership. Khan joined Clifton and was cruelly ran out backing up at the non strikers end for 0. N. Curtis was next in and let loose from the start, hitting some quick runs and good boundaries. Clifton was also going hard at everything and hitting some nice boundaries of his own and with some quick running between the wickets, Aspenden managed to post 223. Clifton falling to the last ball of the innings for 80, trying to smash it for 6.

Today also saw the first, last and only game of the season for Pankhurst who opened up down the hill and skipper Albon coming up the hill. Both bowlers starting with Maidens and building pressure from the beginning. Pankhurst was first to strike when the Pirton opener edged to point and Albon took a solid catch. He then took a second when number 3 smashed one straight to Baxter at mid off. It was then Albons turn to strike when he picked up 2 in 2 and almost getting a hattrick. Pankhurst finished off by nicking the left handed opener to slip where Strange took a solid catch. Albon 2-12 and Pankhurst 3-25 bowled brilliantly. Rushworth and I. Curtis replaced them and picked up where they left off. Curtis bowling a good length and getting abit of movement away helped him beat the bat on several occasions until he was rewarded with a caught behind. Rushworth was also causing the batsmen trouble at the other end aswell. He sliped a wider one down and the oncoming Pirton batmen missed it leaving N. Curtis with a nice stumping. With Pirton in all sorts of trouble, Curtis and Rushworth finished it off by taking the last 4 wickets in quick succession. With the last of them being dragged onto leg stump from a ball that was about 5 ft from off stump! Back to winning ways for the ASPS and a great team effort.

Rushworth with ASPCC career best figures of 3-14 & all the ASPS bowlers who all went for less than 3.5 runs per over. Also to Baxter 90 and Clifton 80, who put on 178 for the 2nd wicket.
