Bishops Stortford III v Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team on Sat 22 Aug 2015 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won by 6 wickets
Match report
On a sweltering day in Stortford, ASP arrived knowing a win will see them promoted to Division 1 for the first time in their history. A flat track and a lightning fast outfield greeted them as well, and Clifton won the toss and decided to field first. Surrey and Fitzgerald opened the bowling with Surrey getting some late swing, but Fitzgerald only bowled 2 overs before his knee gave out, bringing Ward into the fray. ASP exerted a bit of control early doors, but the BS openers started to take toll of some wayward bowling from Ward, so much so that ex Stortford stalwart Leaver had to take over and plonk it on a length to regain some control. Leaver dismissed Fernando, and Strange dismissed Lucas, both caught by Clifton at midwicket. This bought skipper Barrett to the crease who started well, with support from Makin. Makin, however, used a lot of overs up making 28 before holing out off Humphrey. Barrett continued past 50 before Humphrey bowled him with a jaffa. BS scraped and scuttled their way to 205-6, which on a big ground and a fast outfield was a little under par. After tea, with Jabar indisposed with a stomach bug, it was left to the two Lukes' to open the batting, and with Humphrey striking some meaty blows, the partnership went past 50 before Humphrey was caught behind. ASP were a little behind the rate, but Ward took 20 off one Pike over, on his way to a rapid 26, which put ASP back up with the rate. However Baxter was dismissed for 0, which meant the poorly Jabar had to come out at 5 to join Clifton. This proved to be the turning point in the game as both players took toll of some indifferent BS bowling. It appeared that only something disasterous could start ASP now, and their hearts were in their mouths when Clifton gave himself up to prevent Jabar being run out, but this only bought Devonshire to the crease, who in tandem with Jabar, hit some crunching shots. The equation was up at nearly 7 an over off the last 15, but with some great running and massive hitting, ASP won with 3.5 overs to spare, to cue some very subdued celebrations, with everyone feeling the heat and the pressure of the day. So ASP were duly promoted, leaving the small matter of the league title up for grabs next week against Takeley, and then Clifton's party!!!
