Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team v Willingale on Sat 01 Aug 2015 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won by 173 runs
Match report
A warmish day greeted Willingale as they made the trip to little old Aspenden. Clifton lost the toss and was asked to bat, so he and Jabar strode to the crease to face polar opposites of opening bowlers, Airey, with his pace and movement, and Read with no pace and movement. Jabar soon perished for 11 to a ball that kept low and pinned him leg before. Humphrey didn't fare much better as he was caught behind for off the pacy Airey. This bought Baxter and Clifton together, and they consolidated well, with Baxter putting the bad ball away well and Clifton ticking the board over. Willingale surprisingly rested Airey with 4 overs of his spell left when ASP thought he would bowl through. The rest of Willingale's bowling was sketchy at best with Reed and Robinson taking some punishment from Baxter who moved to his 2nd league 50 in 3 innings. By this time Clifton decided to turn the heat up on the fielders and bowlers with some flashing drives and tremendous running between the wickets, as he and Baxter put on 151 for the 3rd wicket, before Clifton was bowled. Fitzgerald came to the crease and hit a couple of boundaries as Baxter looked to push on to a ton, but he was bowled cruelly short on 94, but still a top quality innings under early pressure. Devonshire flexed his muscles by hitting 2 sixes and a four off Ward as ASP closed on a competitive 220-4. ASP came out buoyed by their recovery and immediately took the fight to Willingale, with Fitzgerald bowling Ward in the 2nd over for a duck, this started a sequence of wickets reducing Willingale to 9-6!! With Surrey bowling superbly at the other end, swinging the ball late, he bowled the dangerous Robinson for a duck and picked up Airey without scoring as well, and Fitzgerald caught and bowled Corner, before Surrey clean bowled Jenkins with a pearler. Willingale were in disarray, and even after a few lusty blows down the order they subsided to 47 all out. A great team performance again from ASP as we approach the business end of the season, win our last 4 games and we are champions....
