Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team v Roding Valley on Sat 18 Jul 2015 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won by 7 wickets
Match report
On another glorious day at the ACG, Roding Valley were the visitors, and the ASPS had revenge on their mind against the only team to beat them so far this season. Winning the toss Clifton inserted RV on what looked a good pitch, and with Devonshire reprising his opening bowler slot from last week, quickly removed one of the openers with a rank long hop that he gloved down the leg side to the keeper. He was soon removed from the attack as Surrey took 2 quick wickets, and Leaver picked up one from the other end. Albon joined the fray and immediately stemmed the flow of runs whilst picking up a wicket caught at mid on. RV were struggling on 102-6, but a sprightly partnership soon put ASPS under pressure again, before Strange dismissed the number 4 for a well made 48, and then had their keeper caught by Leaver on the boundary before snaring a caught and bowled to finish with 3-19. RV added a few too many runs for their last wicket to leave ASP chasing 193 for victory. After a sumptuous tea, Clifton had to rearrange the batting order, as ASP were missing Jabar, Edwards, Humphrey and Jordan from previous weeks. Strange rolled back the years and opened up with Clifton and these two chugged along at 3 an over with Strange unfurling some classic cover drives. The partnership had reached 49 when Strange skied one to extra cover, and with Leaver bagging a duck, ASP were 62-2. Baxter joined Clifton at the crease as the equation left us to get 130 off the last 20 overs. Some brilliant running and great placement from both batsmen bought the target down to 77 off 11 overs, and from here on in, ASP bossed the game, both batsmen went to 50, Baxters first in the league, and Clifton was out to a tired shot for 58, this didn't matter as Devonshire came in and hit 2 x 4's and 2 x 6's in his 25* to enable ASP to romp home by 7 wickets with 3.2 overs to spare, with Baxter producing the innings of the day with 67* and he had the pleasure of hitting the winning boundary. Another quality performance whilst missing key players!
