Match report ASP welcomed Epping Foresters to the ACG in what turned out to be a tense encounter. Skipper Clifton won the toss and inserted Epping, and Edwards and Fitzgerald opened up with pace and accuracy, with Edwards snaring the opener for 4. Poole, however, was going about his business quietly and effectively, picking up the singles and the odd boundary. ASP toiled in the sticky conditions, and with Epping reaching 187-3 with 8 overs left, a big target looked on the cards. The introduction of Strange and Ward changed the course of the game though, as they crashed to 197 all out, with Strange picking up 4-14 and Ward 3-5. In reply, the extremely vocal Foresters side picked up the early wicket of Ward after he crashed a huge six into the trees, but Clifton and Edwards took ASP up to 85, before Edwards was dismissed, this heralded a collapse from 85-1 to 95-5, bringing Groom into bat with skipper Clifton. These two rotated the strike nicely, with Groom crunching some lovely boundaries, and Epping started to get more and more narky, with some unnecessary verbals directed at batsmen and umpires alike. Clifton was dismissed at 165, bringing Baxter to the crease, who hit 3 quick boundaries, before falling at 185. This bought the evergreen Strange to the crease, and he and Groom sought to score the 12 runs needed off the last 2 overs. Helped by a misfield and some wayward bowling, ASP needed 4 off the last ball of the penultimate over, and after some 'chirp' from the keeper, Strange finished it with a huge six back over the bowlers head, leaving Groom 57* at the other end, his best innings for some time!! All in all, a fantastic victory against a noisy and sometimes over the top Epping team.
