Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team v Three Caps on Sat 23 May 2015 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won by 114 runs
Match report
A dull, overcast day greeted Three Caps to the Green, and Captain Chaos lost the toss and we were inserted into bat. With our usual opening partnership broken up by Akbar being late, Clifton decided to open with himself and Kallum. This seemed to galvanise Kallum who, after a rough start to the season, played beautifully as he and Luke put on 89 for the first wicket in 16 overs, before Kallum fell for a brutal 70. Zorbo came and went, which bought the tardy Jabar to the crease, and he looked in the mood from the off, rotating the strike at will, and crunching some sumptuous boundaries. Clifton soon went, but this only bought the Iced Gem to the crease who played some lovely leg glances on his way to 35. Akbar was upping the tempo at the other end, and with Devonshire smashing a couple of boundaries late on, ASP raced over 250, with Akbar unselfishly running himself out off the last ball looking for an extra run. After a jacket spud, chilli, beans and cheese tea, ASP went hunting for early wickets, and got their first through that man Akbar again, who chased a lost cause to the boundary, hauled it back, and hurled a throw in that left the batsman hopelessly short of his ground. Zorbo claimed the number 3 with a plumb LBW decision, and ASP were keeping a lid on proceedings. This all changed in a flurry of boundaries off of Surrey who struggled to find any rhythm, and Three Caps were soon up with the rate. Bear was soon bought in to the attack, and went for 10 in his first over, but claimed the important wicket of the well set opener. The number 4 was still cracking boundaries, and Bear was still going at 6 an over, but thanks to some excellent catching from the demon Akbar, and some canny flight and guile, he continued to pick up wickets, picking up Three Caps last hope by having the number 4 caught. Still more boundaries were hit, but a flurry of wickets left Three Caps in the mire, and their skipper finished the game by holing out first ball to long on! All in all, a good performance, against one of the nicest bunch of lads we have played against in a long time...
