Stevenage v Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Sunday XI on Sun 13 Apr 2014 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won by 71 runs
Match report
The Mighty Asp’s turned up in sunny Stevenage for the first game of the 2014 cricket season. After the start of season ‘throwing the ball around badly’, the toss was done and Asp’s were to set a total.
Devonshire and Clifton strode to the wicket after a long winter of nets & raring to get back in the middle. Devonshire looked solid in defence in the first over but was undone by a miss hit off a short ball in the next for 0. Williams joined Clifton in the middle and the pair concentrated on getting in for a long bat. Clifton bought up the first boundary of the season with a nice shot through cover and Williams soon followed in stylish fashion hitting 3 fours in quick time. The watchful Clifton looked solid at the other end, picking up 1’s and 2’s along with a couple of lovely drives through cover and back down the ground. Williams now settled smacked his way to 40 before he was bowled, just after Clifton hit his first 50 of the season. Big hitting Peters was next in at 4 and took the bowler on from the first ball, hitting him straight back over his head twice in 2 balls. Peters carried on the positive hitting and it wasn’t long before Clifton and Peters had hit some nice 6’s, Peters with a beauty straight back down the pitch and out the ground. Peters also fell for 40 after being bowled. Phipps joined Clifton to a rousing ovation for Mundens Finest. Clifton on 80 with 3 overs to go, blasted 14 off just a few balls, but after some unfortunate confusion with the amount of balls left, Clifton was left on 94*, a great way for the league skipper to start the season, and Phipps on 3*. Aspenden setting a very competitive total of 201.
After a good tea, the Stevenage openers prepared to face Wardy and Albon. Wardy getting off to a great start, picking up 2 wickets in his first two overs after catches from Baxter & Clifton and leaving Stevenage at 5-2. It wasn’t long before Albon got in on the act and picked up his only wicket of the game. Stevenage were on the edge of a massive collapse when Peters picked up the ball at short fine leg and rocketed it into the stumps, getting a great run out, leaving the home team 4 down for not many. Wardy was rewarded with a good spell by picking up a third at the end of his spell giving him great figures of 3-24 off 8. Albon as always bowled tightly, beating the bat on several occasions to end with 1-21 off his 8, unlucky not to have claimed a couple more wickets. Asps sub player Dan Kilbey (Stevenage player) had fielded out of his skin all innings taking 2 catches aswell, then bowled just aswell for 0-16 off 6 unfortunate not get a wicket when Baxter could only get his finger tips to a quick slip chance. Signs for Aspenden looked good when young Green came on and bowled some big turners, getting 1-30 off 6. The tall quick Devonshire replaced Kilby. He was straight on the money when his first ball cut in a mile and took the top of off stump, an unplayable delivery leaving the batsmen trying to figure out what just happened. He then picked up another with a short ball that stuck in the wicket, which the batsmen guided it into the hands of the waiting Clifton at midwicket to take an early lead in the catches cup & leaving him on 98 for the club. Baxter had replaced Nick and after the Stevenage number 11 playing all around the first two overs started to take a like to Baxters bowling hitting him some nice shots down the ground. Devonshire picked up another when his pace went through Stevenage’s young defensive number 7. Baxter finished off proceedings with an easy run out in the last over. Stevenage all out for 130. Devonshire ended with great figures of 3-17 off 6, and certainly one to watch if he carries on bowling like that! Baxter ending on 0-21 off 4.4, unlucky not to have picked a wicket up. The game slightly marred when Curtis got hit in the mouth by the ball! I’m sure everyone will join me in saying speedy recovery Neil.
