Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won by 20 runs
Match report
After a rainy start the sun shone for Aspenden at Farnham CC. ASP's lost the toss and were put into bat on a slightly damp wicket. It was Humphrey & Clifton to open the batting. Farnhams young quick seamer was banging it in short and wide for Clifton & Humphrey to play some beautiful cut shots between them. Humphrey looked comfortable until he unfortunately got himself out turning the bat on a little flick to leg and got a leading edge straight back to the bowler for 8. Leaver joined the Skipper in the middle and looked settled and confident from his first shot. With the wicket doing a lot both batsmen found it hard to play scoring shots, until Leaver started finding the singles in the outfield and Clifton determined to run two's and three's. Things were looking steady fro the ASP's, unfortunately Leaver then pulled a muscle in his leg and had to retire hurt. Edwards joined Clifton who was getting closer to another league 50. Edwards only manage one before getting out. Groom stuck around for a while to get 9 but unfortunately fell with 10 overs left. R. Devonshire was in next to try help push the run rate along. Clifton bought up his 50 and soon after Devonshire hit his first boundary of a great knock. Devonshire then clattered one over square leg for 6 and then a cracking straight drive for 4. Devonshire's positivity rubbed off on Clifton who then started to hit the ball to the boundary. After a quick 50 partnership, Devonshire hit our for a very well made 30. Baxter joined Clifton and after some good running and a decent shot for four Baxter was stumped for 7. King was next in, he only managed three before getting out and Clifton was soon after for a well played 79. It was left to Curtis and Strange to score 6 off a well bowled last over. Asps had set a competitive 181 to win.
With opening bowler Leaver unable to bowl, Edwards started along with King in his first league match in a couple of seasons. Edwards started brilliantly, getting the ball to do all sorts, hitting the both opening batsmen on the gloves a couple of times each. King was first with the break through, getting a caught & bowled. It wasn't long after that that Edwards got his first of the day aswell. After some more good bowling Edwards then picked up Farnhams number four for his second of the day. King finished his first 6 overs and was replace by Strange. Immediately Farnham's number 5 was very positive and played some risky but good shots to start a worrying partnership for the Asps. Baxter replaced Edwards who bowled extremely well picking up 2-24 off 10 overs. Baxter started his first two overs well but was then smashed for 12 in his third. Strange was starting to find some good control but couldn't get the breakthrough. With Farnham looking like they may be on for victory, Albon was bought into replace Baxter and picked up Farnhams young number 5 after a good innings. With the game in the balance Albon then picked up another to put Asps in control. Strange with un lucky figures of 0-41 from 10, was replaced by King who picked up a wicket in his first over back & then the big one of Farnhams opener Caught by Strange at Long On. King finished his spell with another wicket giving him 10-2-31-4 fantastic figures for the returning King. With Farnham needing just over 30 from the last 5 overs and 2 wickets left, Baxter replaced King and bowled well until Farnhams Number 10 hit a good 6 to get them well in the game. Albon then struck to get his third and giving him brilliant figures of 9-0-30-3. Albon was in it again in the next over when he took a great catch on the midwicket boundary off Baxter (1-25), Giving Asps their fourth league win leaving them top of HECL DIV 2 & unbeaten. A mention for some fantastic fielding form everyone in the Asps team.
