Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team v Asvion on Fri 30 May 2003 at 2.00
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won 11 Runs
Match report
On a blisteringly hot May day, ASP once again took on their rivals from across the water as they played host to Asvion in our annual challenge match. In the days leading up to the game ASP players had been in determined mood in their bid to win the cup back. The game started with a minute's silence in memory of Bill Wylds who had died the previous Saturday, and this was brilliantly observed by all present. Miles and Bear opened the batting and quickly started putting Johan and Matthijs to the sword as they rattled up a 100 partnership. Only when Bart bought himself on did the runrate slow a little. When Bear was finally out for 54, in strode Groomy after about 6 Carlsbergs and proceeded to get a blob, oh well, at least we got to see Spencer smack it about a bit.Miles went on to 81 before succumbing to the heat and the thought of a lager and it was left to the Alfie and Alex to smack it about at the end to push us up to 246-4 in 40 overs. In reply Alex Wolf picked up the first of his two ducks over the weekend as The Baron struck. After this though Laurens and Matthijs started clubbing the bowling everywhere, but if we were looking for some respite after this none came as Bart smashed 52 in double quick time. At one stage Asvion were 170-2 off just 20 overs, but the wily Patmore then bought on Miles and Bear who bowled well in tandem as Asvion started to panic. Bear picked up 5 wickets as the Dutch couldn't master the turning ball. It was left to Spencer to let Roy hit him for 2 fours to get it close before cleaning him up to allow ASP to win the cup back by 11 runs. After the game many beers were drunk and many songs were sung on the karaoke, most memorably the Dutch lads rendition of "Paradise by the dashboard light". And apparently the singing could be heard in the centre of Buntingford and had alot of people pissing themselves laughing!! A great day(yet again) and everyone is already looking forward to coming to Asvion next year, i reckon there will be 30 of us!!
