Match report A much needed win for ASP was set up by a 184 run opening partnership between Michael Strange(102) and Gordon Devonshire. The openers saw off some tight early bowling from Hyde, Crone and Stride before opening their shoulders against the mediocre change bowlers of Theydon. Strange reached his ton with 18 fours, before being run out, this sparked a mini collapse as big hitting Mark Potter recorded a first baller, cutting a long hop straight to point.Groom, Williams, Devonshire senior, and Rob Devonshire soon followed before Baxter took 12 off the last over to set Theydon a competitive score of 222-6. In reply Thompson soon dismissed Crone, but a succession of four balls from him and opening bowler Groom meant that Theydon were up with the rate. Thompson, however, regained his line and length and dismissed the dangerous Hyde, before bowling Marnock. At the other end Goldie was batting well, but ASP used their heads and allowed him the singles so they could attack the other end. Strange came on and bottled one end up, only going for 19 runs off his ten overs, and it was he who ended Goldie's resistance, having him stumped by Booth for 49. Wickets fell regularly after this in persistent drizzle, before an entertaining 9th wicket stand threatened to put the dampeners on a good ASP win, but Groom held a good catch in the wet and all that was left was for young Lewis Fitzgerald to pick up the last wicket bowling Stride leg stump. A good end to a home league campaign that has threatened much, but delivered little
