Farnham II v Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team on Sat 19 May 2007 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won by 114 runs
Match report
Winning the toss and batting first Aspenden were pegged back by some very accurate bowling from the host's openers and then lost both Groom and Yates cheaply. Potter joined Strange for what was to be the game's defining partnership. The pair played themselves in before dispatching the change bowlers to all parts of the considerable playing area. Potter scored his first league century and Strange fell 9 short of his hundred. Useful cameos followed from King and Booth as the visitors amassed an impressive 282-5.
As can often be the case, when a match seems to have already been won, complacency set in amongst the Aspenden players as some very sloppy out cricket allowed an extremely average side to start well. However, wickets fell at regular intervals as some solid bowling was backed up with a few outstanding catches. First league wickets for Baxter and Ward were high spots in a rather dull display from Aspenden in the field although ultimately Farnham did not possess the fire power to trouble the visitors as they finished on 168-7.
On paper, a resounding victory for the Aspenden players is to be celebrated, but the two teams that are promoted this year will be exactly that, 'teams'. An unassailable position such as that which Aspenden had a tea was the perfect opportunity to maintain a high tempo and concentration levels ensuring that a poor batting side was bowled out rather than being allowed to limp towards 200. In this regard, much improvement will be necessary if Aspenden wish to avoid another season of mid table mediocrity. The players will need to decide whether they want to become a team as they now begin a series of much tougher games over the next few weeks.
Champagne moment: By some considerable distance this week's champagne moment goes to Paul Ward who was prepared at the last minute to put aside his own plans and turn out for his teammates.
