Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team v Little Hallingbury on Sat 12 May 2007 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won 6 wickets
Match report
Fielding first in overcast conditions, Aspenden soon had the opposition in trouble as they lost two early wickets to another lively opening spell from Sapsford. He was ably backed up with consistent line and length from Potter at the other end as the visitors struggled. Hallingbury lost wickets at frequent intervals as Thompson and Strange replaced the opening pair to further torment the batsmen. Supported by some good catching, but most importantly, enthusiasm and concentration in the field, Aspenden restricted the opposition to a paltry 115 all out.
During the tea break the heavens opened and a delay of some 40 minutes ensued. Although the rain eased, the wicket was still very wet as the captains agreed to 'give it a go'. As the rain continued Aspenden lost Groom early and Sapsford and Strange soon followed. A flurry of runs from Yates and Potter steadied things and took Aspenden closer to their target but the dismissal of Yates lifted the spirits of the visitors. However, Booth joined Potter and this combination of experience and youthful exuberance was to be decisive. Booth was content to rotate the strike leaving his partner to play some big shots which soon secured the victory for the home team.
All in all, a highly satisfactory display from Aspenden, putting well and truly behind them the ring rustiness of the previous week. On a cautionary note however, Hallingbury look to be one of the division's weaker outfits and sterner tests will surely follow. Nevertheless, if Aspenden can maintain the higher standards set in this victory and progress as a unit they can be more than a match for any of their league opponents.
Champagne Moment:
1st= Potter finishing the match with a six to reach 50 and 3 mid ons and a long on for their opener.
