Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team v North Weald on Sat 27 Apr 2013 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won 61 runs
Match report
On a day that Captain Scott would have thought twice about going out on, the ASPS entertained North Weald at the home of cricket. After Derek won the toss, an unusually strong friendly team decided to have a hit. Bear and Groomy opened up, and played nicely against some of the slowest 'strike' bowlers ever seen at Aspenden, with both players hitting a couple of nice boundaries. NW's opening bowler was an excitable fellow who was appealing for LBW before the ball even reached the batsman, the ball proceeded to hit Groomy on the top of the hip. Groomy was caught behind and Zorbo, after hitting a sumptuous back foot cover drive was bowled off bat and pad by Mr Excitable, who roared like a wounded lion at the magnitude of his achievement. The Ego was next in, and Bear decided he didn't want to bat with him, so got out, enabling Brigadier Block to send us all to sleep for the next 20 overs, at one point scoring at the Chris Gayle-esque strike rate of 9.68 runs per 100 balls. Luckily Potter can still put bat to ball effectively, and with NW's bowler struggling with a rabbit hole in his run up, he plundered 6 fours and 6 sixes in his 79. The Brigadier soon fell attempting a rash shot, and Bert followed 2 balls later to an even more rash shot, Clark chopped on, The Hat was castled for 1 and it took the Littlest Hobo to take us up to 185 at tea. After a wondrous tea consisting of salmon, cream cheese and rocket sandwiches, we took to the field. Zorbo and Fred opened the bowling and kept things tighter than BC in the pub, with Zorbo cleaning up their opener early doors with one that the batsman felt kept a little low, it hit 2/3rds of the way up middle stump as he was on the Central and the ball was on the Bakerloo. The Littlest Hobo came on and proceeded to take 3 wickets, with a wide, a long hop and an absolute jaffa. The Ego chipped in with the wicket of NW's bingo batsman and apart from some lusty blows from Barton, NW were never in the hunt as Nick The Hat bowled some useful offies and MVG had two dollies dropped off his bowling. NW's skipper fancied some batting practice, and incredibly the 40th and last over was a maiden as ASP run out winners by 61 runs. A disappointing turn out at the pub was the only dampener on the day with no oppo, and only a handful of us, but never fear we still drunk Phil out of Desperados........
