South Loughton I v Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team on Sat 23 Aug 2003 at 1.30
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won by losing fewer wickets
Match report
An even closer game than last week means that ASP achieved back to back promotions. ASP won the toss and decided to bat on a tricky pitch. They started slowly in the face of some good bowling from Nothnagel and Smith before Thompson was dismissed by Nothnagel's slower ball. Michael Strange and Simon Groom then pushed the scoring rate up in the face of some ordinary bowling from Jones whose 4 overs went for 36. Strange was next to go as he played on to Henman who bowled a very tight spell and picked up 3 wickets. Wickets fell at regular intervals as the scoring rate slowed to a crawl and it was only in the last few overs when Jonathan Moon and Mathieu Booth started putting bat to ball that the runs come and ASP finished on a competitive 152-8. In reply South Loughton's innings couldn't have got off to a worse start as Nunes was run out after absent mindedly standing outside his crease after playing his shot and Henman skied his first ball to mid on. Thompson bowled Farthing and SL were in trouble at 21-3. Neither Mark or Robbie Stokes hung around long as Strange snared the pair of them and it was only when Pye joined Nothnagel that the tide started to turn as Nothnagel started to take the bowlers on. Pye was bowled by Nigel Cooke and this bought Smith to the crease who batted intelligently by pinching singles and giving Nothnagel the strike. Nothnagel finally perished for 93 caught just inside the boundary by Miles Thompson and SL entered the last over needing 7 to win as long as they didn't lose any more wickets. Cooke bowled Wilson first ball and this meant that SL now needed 8 to win. 2 were scored from the next ball before Smith was run out meaning that a tie would be good enough for ASP. Wixey and Jones were left needing 3 to win off the last ball which was lofted into the outfield but they could only get 2 and ASP were left to celebrate an unlikely victory and their second successive promotion. If ASP win next week they will go up as champions(or if Dunmow lose)
