Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Sunday XI v Hatfield Broad Oak on Sun 27 May 2012 at 2pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won by 13 runs
Match report
With Aspenden bathed in glorious sunshine, the ASPS welcomed Hatfield Broad Oak to the green. Asps won the toss & with a strong looking batting line up Albon chose to set a score. Clifton & Potter were first to the middle. The wicket had no real bounce and was very hard to pick anything up. With HBO opening with a slow spinner it was even harder to get anything away. Potter managed to get the innings underway with a hard hit four. Clifton then pushed forward to a ball that just tickle the edge on its way through to the keeper and a big appeal saw Clifton fall for 2. Baxter joined Potter in the middle & found out how hard it was to score after still being on no score after facing about 20 balls. Potter started to find the middle & the boundary. Baxter then stepped down the wicket to plant a ball through cow corner to get off the mark & then clipped the next ball for four as well. Potter was also struggling to pick up the pace and bounce of the wicket, almost top edging to square leg. Both batsmen were trying to put the singles and managed to get ASPS upto 40 off 10 overs. Baxter hit a nice sweep shot for four & Potter smashed consecutive boundaries down the ground. After a couple of nice shots, Baxter hauled out to long on & was caught for 25. Worby joined Potter at the crease & looked solid in defence, hitting some nice looking drives. Potter was starting to look settled & ready for a long afternoon. Worby made a nice 12 before being caught as well. Birthday boy Grace was in next & unfortunately top edged to slip on his first ball, out for a birthday golden. Potter then fell soon after, pulling out of a big cut shot but just couldn't get the bat out of the way & was caught at cover for 39. Sapsford & N. Curtis were both new to the middle, both finding it hard to get the ball away as well. N. Curtis was very unfortunate to middle the ball straight to cover in the air for four. Young I. Curtis was next in & as did Worby, looked solid in defence. Sapsford managed to find the boundary a couple of times, but was caught for 15 & a very low score looked ominous for the ASPS. Albon joined Curtis but Curtis was out bowled by a good ball, for a solitary one. Ward & Albon combined to add another 20 onto the ASPS score, although with some confused running, maybe they could of added another 10. Albon hit 14 before being bowled. Surrey had the same fate as Grace, getting out first ball. ASPS posting a below par 137, but with the wicket not playing true, could it be a competitive score?
After an excellent tea from Clifton (Hayley)!! Aspenden took to the field, knowing nothing but a perfect performance would be enough. And it started off better than perfect when Ward struck in his first over, bowling the opening batsmen, who looked good after driving his first ball for a lovely four through cover. Things got better when Albon then took a wicket in his first over aswell, and again in his second, leaving HBO 7-3 off 4 overs. HBO then dug in and started to build a partnership before Albon picked up another leaving him with good figures of 6-1-23-3. Ward at the other end was giving the batsmen nothing and unfortunate to only pick up one wicket. Ward ended with 8-2-22-1. Surrey replaced John up the hill & Clifton down the hill. Surrey was tight & as Ward before, didn't give the batsmen anything. Clifton steaming down the hill off the long run up bowled accurately & quicly. Asps were very much under the pressure with HBO 90-4 and cruising to victory. Clifton was then rewarded for some good bowling picking up HBO's top batsmen LBW & the match was back on. Baxter replaced Surrey up the hill & started to find the right spots. Baxter then got another breakthrough getting one to turn just enough through the gate. He then picked up HBO's settled in batsmen out caught by a great catch by Worby in cover. With the game right back on Surrey came on to replace Clifton who finished with 7-0-34-1 a nice first spell of the season for Clifton. Surrey then picked up two in two balls to put him on a hat trick but he would have to wait as it was the last ball of the over. With ASPS needing one wicket & HBO 13 runs to win Baxter picked up the last wicket in the next over, bowling HBO’s young number 11, making Surrey wait till the next match to get his hat trick. Surrey finished 6-1-23-2, more mature bowling from the young left arm seamer, who is turning into an important bowler for the ASPS. Baxter finished with 6.3-0-16-3 a nice spell. Special mention to the umpires who allowed Surrey to be bowled off the 7th ball of the over when batting, And when Surrey was on his hat trick they called over with only 5 balls in the over bowled. Unlucky Surrey!!
