Hertingfordbury v Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Sunday XI on Sun 15 Apr 2012 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won 53 runs
Match report
On a day where we had rain, hail and beautiful sunshine, ASPS started their season in great form with everyone getting in on the action. Albon lost the toss and ASPCC were put into bat on a grassy, slighly damp wicket. Clifton and Devonshire walked out to the middle first up & put on a solid partnership. Devonshire clubbed his way to 20 which including a cracking straight drive for 4, a great way to bring up the first boundary of the season. He eventually fell to a ball which stayed a bit low and took leg stump. This brought out big hitter Nash to the crease. Clifton was finding the gaps and making the most of some sloppy fielding, racking up 1's and 2's. Nash then took off and hit ASP's first 6 of the season middling it over long on's head. Runs were flowing nicely until Nash spooned one in the air and was caught for a quickfire 36. Grace joined Clifton at the crease, who was nudging his way to patient 50. After a couple of rain breaks, Grace, after timing some nice looking shots was also out Caught. Strange walked to the crease and started to find the middle of the bat but also the fieldsmen. After a very well played 50 Clifton started to tee off and found the boundaries more often. Strange ended up caught for 5. Taylor and Clifton pushed for runs and it lead to a very good run out of Taylor after playing a couple of nice drives. Wardy dealt with the last over blocking it out well. ASP's ended on a competitive score of 177-5.
After Tea, Taylor & Pankhurst opened the bowling. Both bowlers making the batsmen play and miss on several occasions in the first few overs. Taylor was rewarded when he bowled the batsmen off the pad. Pankhurst could, and should have had at least two wickets, firstly dropping a caught and bowled chance that just popped back out his hands, then Nashy spilling a very hard chance at gully, he finished with 7-1-26-0 unfortunate not to take a wicket. Taylor bowled tightly the whole way through, not giving any room for the batsmen to play shots and ended with 1-20 off his 7 overs. Surrey and Ward then took over the attack. Hertingfordbury's big hitting number 3 took a liking to Surrey who just strayed onto leg side in his first spell. Ward bowled consistently on off stump and was unlucky to end with 5-0-40-0. Nash replaced Surrey and got an immediate breakthrough getting the 2nd opener out ct behind by Baxter. With Albon spinning ASP's to victory at the other end as well. Albon picked up a double wicket maiden having one ct behind and bowling another victim with the quicker ball, he quickly snaffled another 2 wickets ending on 5-1-15-4, a great start to the season for the Sunday skipper. None of Hertingfordbury's batsmen could put Nash away and he was rewarded with another wicket, ending on 5-2-2-2 a brilliant spell. With Hertingfordbury 7 down the moment of the match came when Grace picked the ball up at midwicket, jumped and turned 180 degrees in the air and run out the batsmen with an awesome bit of fielding. Surrey came back for a second spell and got it right on the spot, picking himself up a very nice wicket on the way, and pulling his economy back to end with a good figures of 5-0-28-1. Strange came on to bowl his mandatory over of the season, and after the batsmen played and missed at the first 5 balls of the over, he was caught off the last. Strange 1-1-0-1. A great team effort rewarded by a win. And a fantastic way to start the 2012 season.
