Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Sunday XI v Chrishall on Sun 20 May 2012 at 2pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won by 2 wickets
Match report
A very dull and gloomy day in Aspenden was light up by a good contest by two village clubs. ASPS choose to field first and try put the squeeze of Chrishall from the start. Sapsford was rolling back the years when he was thrown the new ball and asked to steam in down the hill, and after a suspect first over he started to find his line and length, causing the batsmen problems. Albon opened up the hill, hoping there would be a bit of turn in the wicket early on. Sapsford started causing some problems and took the first wicket of the innings, getting Jesus out. Albon bowled 6 overs keeping it economical but with no wickets. Chrishall were going along nicely with the remaining opener scoring a 50. Ward came on down the hill with ASPS desperate for the second wicket. Meanwhile Surrey came on up the hill and bowled some lovely length balls, managing to beat the bat a couple of times and unfortunate not to pick up a wicket. Wardy was still plugging away and was rewarded when he picked up his first of three good wickets. After Wardy got both the batsmen who were in and set, out, Chrishall struggled to find runs. Strange was thrown the ball and bowled some beautiful deliveries, beating the batsmen regularly. Ward finished with 3-36 off his 8 overs, a lovely spell of bowling. Surrey finished off his overs bowling well and not letting the batsmen hit anything. Strange got his rewards for good bowling, ending with 1-26 off 7. Albon bowled his last 2 overs picking up a couple of wickets aswell leaving him with figures of 2-28 off 8. A nice sight to see our big opening batsmen come and bowl the final over from down the hill. Although he could not pick up a wicket, leaving him wondering if it will be another year before he gets another chance to pick up a wicket. Chrishall finished on a getable target of 178-7.
R. Devonshire opened the batting for the second time in the weekend and was joined by debutant Scott Nash. Disaster in the first over when Devonshire left a ball that came in a long way to take his off stump. Baxter walked to middle to join Nash. Both looked good at the crease. Nash particularly impressing with his driving and pulling. Baxter hit 3 fours and was then judged LBW for 13. One of ASPS younger players Worby came out to bat at 4 and looked confident in every stroke he played. Nash was going along nicely putting every bad ball away for a boundary and before we knew it ASPS were 70-2. Worby smashed his way past his previous highest score for the ASPS, punishing anything short and defending superbly. Worby's lovely and ASPS career high innings of 32, came to an end when one of Chrishall's fielders plucked the ball with one hand taking a very good catch, after Worby had middled it to what looked like just over the fielders head. Grace went to bat with Nash but his innings was soon over when he was bowled for a duck. Curtis walked to the middle with ASPS needing another 80. Nash powered his way past 50 with a couple of big 6's. Curtis was unfortunate to middle the ball straight to cover and was caught for 1. An ASPS collapse looked on its way. Wardy came in blocked everything and passed the strike to the in batsman as much as he could. Nash then carted the bowling to all parts smashing 91 when he was caught after toe ending a ball to mid on. A lovely knock. Strange joined Ward and both clipped a couple of runs with Strange then adding a couple of boundaries, taking the ASPS to another Sunday win. Top performance all round. Special mention To Ed Worby for a new high score and Scott Nash for his debut 91.
