High Roding 2nds v Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team on Sat 26 May 2012 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won 3 wickets
Match report
A beautiful day in High Roding was ASPS next league challenge. ASPS were put into the field by HR. It looked like the correct decision by HR. The wicket was an absolute road & batsmen on both teams were licking their lips. Unfortunately the bowlers did not have the same expectations... Edwards & Nash opened the bowling, Edwards went for a couple of boundaries off two full straight balls, but the wicket allowed the batsmen to really get through the line and play shots. Some dodgy wide decisions & a couple of lucky edges mean't Nash's first over didn't fair much better than Edwards. Both bowlers were finding the right line and lengths but the HR openers were finding the boundary with ease. Nash bowled 5-0-31-0 a decent spell considering how good the wicket was. Strange replaced him & after watching the left handed opener come down the track & hit 2 fours from his first over, Strange got one to turn & crash into the leg stump, breaking a very threatening partnership. Edwards continued bowling good line & length probing away on off stump without any luck, finishing with 10-2-48-0. Strange bowled a good first spell of five overs, reducing the run rate & picking up a valuable wicket. Taylor & Albon replaced Strange & Edwards. Albon bowled well, pitching it in the right places, but the HR batsmen were advancing down the track & finding the boundaries. Taylor bowled with good pace & lines, but after a couple of edges & some well played shots, HR were flying. Albon then struck to break another dangerous looking partnership. Taylor was getting no luck at one end, a contrast to Albon at the other end. He managed to pick up more wickets including a hit wicket. Albon managed to get a well deserved five wicket haul finishing his spell with 10-0-64-5, his second league five for in two games. Taylor ended with 10-0-52-0 unlucky not to get at least one wicket. Strange came back on & immediately picked up another wicket, whilst Sapsford bowled a decent last three overs, going for 3-0-23-0. Strange bowled well in both spells leaving him with 7-0-37-2. HR making a hefty 257-7.
A daunting target set for Aspenden to chase was given hope when Sapsford & the new look Groom went to the middle first up for the ASPS, Sapsford finding the middle of the bat from the first over as did Groom, with boundaries flowing ASPS were flying when the 50 came up in under 10 overs. After a huge straight six by Groom, he was out caught trying to hit another boundary, a well played 18. Edwards walked to the middle to join Sapsford who was going like a train. HR replaced their opening blower with a spin option, & when Edwards hit him for 16 off his first over ASPS looked in a great position. Out of nowhere Edwards fell Ct and Bowled for a lovely looking 26, & Sapsford fell a couple of overs later edging the quick blower behind for a well made 42. The in form Strange and Clifton found them selves in quickly. Strange was timing the ball beautifully and Clifton was finding all the gaps & ASPS were off flying again. Another blow when Clifton lost his wicket for a nice 22. Taylor nudged the singles & kept Strange on strike, who was racing towards 50. With a lovely shot for four, Strange's second league fifty was up, he wasn't too last much longer when he was caught out the next ball. This brought R. Devonshire too the crease, and after planting a couple of lovely fours through cover the game looked in reach of ASPS. Taylor at the other end was happy to get Devonshire on strike and what a great decision it was when Devonshire smashed one of the biggest sixes of the season so far, over midwicket (and letting the bowler know). Taylor was suddenly bowled by HR's quick bowler & Nash strolled to the crease, he hit a four instantly & with 16 need off 3 overs Devonshire was bowled for a fantastically well struck & very important 22. Baxter was next in, & tickled his first ball down to fine leg for four & smashed his second straight back over the bowlers head for another four. In the next over Nash was on strike & punished a short ball, slapping it through mid wicket for four and then doing exactly the same to the next ball, giving ASPCC a fantastic & memorable win. A special mention for the 50 extras HR bowled. Jug Up!!
