Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Lost 23 runs
Match report
A very young and inexpierenced Asps side came close to winning a match that will live long in the memory of those who played in what was a brilliant sunday game to fierce rivals buntingford.
Buntingford won the toss a chose to bat. Sapsford and Pankhurst bowled through their overs well and Sapsford was rewarded with the wicket of Nash who's poor shot was well held by Pearman. That brought in Dixon who scored a quick 50 before Albon had him stumped by st.Lindsay.
The run rate dropped and Potter brought himself on and took 3 wickets in 9 balls to leave Buntingford 135-6. Si Lindsay bowled well at the other end and got 2 wickets. Then some big hitting from Izuru 71 not out and Pearce 15 not out then helped Buntingford get to 240-7 off their 40 overs at tea. After a fantastic tea Asps opened the batting with G.Devonshire and Wallace. Wallace found runs easy to come by and smashed 20 in the opening 3 overs before being bowled. Si Lindsay 0, Sapsford 1 and G.Devonshire 6 left Asps in major trouble and staring at a huge defeat at 37-4. In came Potter the skipper and he started off with intent to hit anyfing for 4 or 6. Potter and Devonshire put on 63 in 7 overs to stop the rot and give Asps a fighting chance. Then Devonshire was well caught for 5 and Asps were 100-5 off 13 overs but well up with the rate.
Potter's 50 came in just 7 overs since arriving at the crease when he swept Izuru for 4. Albon supported Potter well by taking singles and giving Potter the strike. Potter had his eye in and started to worry Buntingford by hitting good bowling all around the park to the frustration of the Buntingford players and his partnership with Albon was building until Albon was run out by Potter who was looking for the strike. After 17 overs Asps were 122-6 and still in the game. Potter took a liking to Nash's bowling hitting him into the fields around the green much to the bowlers despair. Hitting him for 34 in just 3 overs. Potter's 100 came up when he hit Nash for another massive 6.
Meaning Potter had reached the milestone whilst only being at the crease for 13 overs and Asps started to believe they had a chance at 145-6. After the drinks break Pearman was caught and this brought in Ward who supported Potter watching him hit Buntingfords bowling to all corners of the ground.
Asps though were running out of batsmen even though they had 20 overs to get 90 runs. Potter and Ward put on 68 for the 8th wicket in 6 overs as Asps started closing in on a win. Ward was well caught in what was another twist in this great match. Potter was racing to 150 finding the gaps and Asps reached 200 off an amazing 25 overs.
With Buntingford really worried they had to resort in replacing their wicket keeper to bring on their 1st 11 fast bowler to try and win the game. St.Lindsay liked that idea and smashed Dixon through the covers for 4 much to the liking of the home team. Potter reached his 150 by cutting Pearce through the covers as Asps got to 216-9 off 27 overs. Potter's 150 came in only 20 overs since his arrival. 25 needed off 13 overs with 1 wicket left was the target and when Potter pulled Dixon to deep mid wicket for what was going to be a certain 6 the young Buntingford player held his nerve to hold a great catch near the line to give the away team the victory. Potter's hard hitting innings ended on 154. Hitting 10 sixes and 20 fours on what was a great team performance from this very young and inexpierenced Asps side, who always fight to the very end.Well done boys
