Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team v Bengeo on Sat 12 Aug 2006 at 1.30
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won 4 wickets
Match report
ASP won a thrilling match against title favourites Bengeo that puts ASP back in the promotion hunt and a possible league title to.ASP won the toss and chose to field in the gloomy weather.Thompson bowled through his 10 overs taking 1-36.Potter struggled at the other end and was replaced by Strange who took 2-58.Bengeo's innings was put together by Ruskins fine 50 and some other lusty hitting.Bengeo looked set for a big score but some good death bowling by Baxter 2-54 who had 2 catches dropped and good ASP fielding ment that Bengeo made 253-9 from their 43 overs. The pick of the ASP bowlers was off spinner Albon who took 3-36.His 3 wickets were all from good catches from Strange,Potter and Williams.
After a fantastic tea ASP opened the batting with Strange and Wissen who put on 50 in quick time for the first wicket.Wissen then played on for 18.But Strange (78) was racing to his 50 playing some fine shots.Booth 8 looked in good touch before being bowled.Martin Spencer was lbw for 6 to leave ASP 110-4 off 20 overs.Potter started to chase the target down by smashing the ball around the ground as he and Groom started to pull things around in ASP favour. Then Groom was well caught for 18 to put Bengeo back in control. With the rate ever increasing Potter continued to play his normal aggresive game hitting the ball to all parts being well supported by the youngster Lindsay who was also hitting boundries.Potter's 50 came up in quick time (28 balls).ASP then needed 74 off 8 overs a tough target in any game.Good shot selection and great running ment that ASP were taking 12/13 an over and up with the rate. With 46 needed off the final 4 overs Potter took things into his own hands and turned the game in ASP favour in 1 over.Hitting a massive six and then splitting the fielders twice to find the boundry and then hitting a single.Lindsay took 1 off the last 2 balls so it was 16 from the over and game on.10 an over from the last 3 ment their was light at the end of the tunnel.Potter and Lindsay were running everything and eventually Lindsay was run out for 16 but it ment more than that to ASP.In came ASP skipper Thompson and he found runs easy to come by.Taking 1's and 2's.ASP needed 20 off 12 balls to win.Potter found the boundry to ease the pressure and he and Thompson took 11 from the over.Poor light and heavy rain made it difficult to bat and run with it being so slippery.9 off 6 was the task and a wide off the first ball made it 8 off 6.Then Thompson went 2 2 1 to make it 3 off 3.Potter and Thompson then exchanged singles to tie the scores at 253.With ASP losing less wickets they had won but with a ball left Potter hit a single to make sure.254-6 off 43 overs to end a fantastic game of league cricket and bring ASP closer to promotion.Potter ended up unbeaten on 86 off 51 balls and Thompson 11 not out.
