Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team v Stansted on Sat 23 Apr 2011 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won 1 wicket
Match report
A Beautiful day and a setting to match, saw the Asps entertain Stansted for the first home game of the season. The toss was lost and Stansted seized the initiative by selecting to bat. It was going to always be a game for blowing away the cob webs and oiling those rusty joints but to be fair the standard of cricket was really very good. Edwards and Nash took to the stage and both bowled exceptionally well no wickets for Edwards but a tidy spell which proved fruitless but I am sure the season holds many wickets for last season’s player of the year. Nash on the other hand made the much needed break through and although he looked like he needed a medic after his second over! He polished off his 10 overs with some really tidy bowling 1 for 15 of 10 overs. So Nashy made the break through with his last ball of the over and with Taylor coming down the hill, the wise President said 'one brings two'....and so it did. Taylor diving for a caught and bowled. A top order collapse ensued with Strange called into the attack after a cameo performance from Sapsford, his first ball in three years! Taylor and Strange both doing a great job of dismantling the Stansted top middle and bottom order. With some excellent fielding so early in the season the bench mark has already been set with some great catches from Clark,Nash,Groom,Strange,Taylor and Edwards. Strange eventually dismissing the collapsing tail of Stansted and finishing with a Jug up! 5 for 17 of 6.5 overs...He's still got it, Taylor after his hugely impressive Stevenage performance finishing with 3 for 44, and not forgetting Sapsford who came on at the end and finished with 1 for 12 of 7.
So with Stansted all out for 127 the target looked achievable, but one should never under estimate one's opponents and especially Stansted who have one of the most potent young bowling attacks and with the pitch throwing up some erratic bounce, anything could happen!
The Devo's opened and unfortunately the bounce got Devo the Elder. Edwards was next up and took a while to adjust to the bounce but eventually started to build an innings. R. Devonshire followed his Dad back to the pavilion for 13. The batting order was some what mixed up and a middle order collapse put the Asps on the ropes in what was turning into a toe to toe battle! Taylor 2 and Clark 5 and with both Groom and Curtis failing to score things were not looking good with Edwards also taking the walk back to the Pavilion for what turned out to be a top score 24. With the score at 53 for 8 things did not look great for the Boys from the Green and Stansted could sense a great comeback. Had things been left too late for the Asps? With a formidable lower order perhaps not! Clifton and Sapsford got things back on track with some lofted chip shots from Sapsford riding his luck and some persistent miss timed swings from Clifton, eventually the score board started to tick once again. A swing too many for Clifton saw him go for 20 and a big hit and catch of the day saw the end of Sapsford 20. This Brought the old school and rear guard to finish the job off with 22 runs needed. Not to undermine the task in hand Nash and Strange made the job look easy and both looked totally comfortable with some majestic stroke play and some great clubbing from Nash. Nash 16 not out and Strange 13 not out.
So a great win against a strong Div 2 side, a great platform from which to build and an all round good team performance. A special thanks to the boys from Stansted a smashing bunch of lads who will be scratching their heads this morning thinking they had this one all wrapped up like a chocolate egg!!!!
