Abridge v Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team on Sat 05 Jun 2010 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won 9 wickets
Match report
This weekend saw the Asps boys on the road again traveling to Abridge, after a dissapointing defeat in a rain affected match agianst Ardley nothing but a victory would suffice....and that was exactly what was delivered in scintillating style in a crushing 9 wicket victory.
The Asps losing the toss were put into the field and Abridge seemed to have made a good choice as the strip looked an absolute belter, however a determined bowling attack of Edwards and Fitzgerald made runs extremely hard to come by. Edwards dismissing one of the openers with a peach of a delivery, some how finding its way between the batsman legs and onto leg stump! Pankhurst was brought into the attack with his looping action, again bamboozling the Abridge top order. His middle part of his spell weighing in for 5 overs 2 for 9 with 4 maidens, impressive stuff.
Runs were drying up for Abridge and the frustration began to show as the Albon and Strange duo teased and eluded the batsman. Strange finishing with 3 for 25 which could have been more, and Albon 2 for 41. It was a great fielding display with some great catches from Pankhurst, Strange and Nash. Nash debutant for the day finished the overs off and this caused the only flash point of the game as several dubious wides were given in the last over. This prompted an unusual out burst from Groom, who questioned the Umpires decision, just goes to show what this season and the quest for promotion means to those Asp boys who fought to squeeze every wicket and stop every run!
After a cracking tea it was the Asps turn to chase down 164 and the pairing of Strange and Groom who had looked so good against Ardley were sent to the middle to do the business.
Unfortunately Groom went early for 4 after some erratic bowling some how found the edge and ended up in leg gully's mitt's.
This brought Edwards and Strange together and what can be only described as a masterclass of swashbuckling batting.
Had it not been for a frustrating rain break this game would have been wrapped up well before the thirty overs it did take. but the rain certainly did not break Strange or Edwards concentration and they carried on pounding the ball to the boundary, The Abridge attack offered nothing in reply and both Strange 59 N.O and Edwards 69 N.O sealed victory in emphatic style.
This crushing victory leaving Skipper Clifton purring and very proud of a professional clinical performance.
Would it be too bold to say promotion winning form?
