Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Sunday XI v Roving Reporters on Sun 06 Jun 2010 at 2pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won 7 wickets

Match report The ASPs Sunday boys capped off a fine weekend for the club with a close run win against Roving Reporters down at The Green. The rain we feared would disrupt the game only turned up for about 20 minutes during the second innings, and even then didn’t seem to upset our run to victory. The game was also used to conduct our own trial of the pink ball as used by the MCC in Dubai in April. Much to our surprise it seemed to hold its shape and colour and only really got damaged by the rain in the second dig.

So, it was under cloudy but unthreatening skies that BC won the toss and elected to field, opting to start with last weeks hero Tank down the hill, and the returning Wardy. Tanky got us off to a great start with a wicket in his first over, caught by Ben Surrey at slip, though not without a little juggle under his chin!!!!! A period then followed where the RR’s batsman got on top, but a packed legside field brought rewards for Wardy who picked up three quick victims (3-44), two caught by Bear taking his catches haul for the season to a round 10. Benny and BC followed on from our opening pair and despite bowling reasonably well runs continued to flow. Thankfully the RR’s main run scorer was sent back to the pavilion starting a lower order collapse and allowing BC (3-27) to finish his spell with three maidens. Sappo made a welcome return to the bowling crease, and although bowling off one leg and with no run up, picked up a wicket and kept it tight. It was left to Bear and Ben to finish the innings with a wicket each, Ben bowling the RR’s No9 all ends up and BC catching at slip to keep him right on Bear’s tail with 9 for the season. RR’s all out for 173 from 39.1 overs.

After the usual super Suzie tea it was the ASP’s turn to face trial by pink ball, and Luke and Lew Robbo were first in the firing line. Lew was clearly seeing the ball well, and some fearsome shots were either finding the boundary or some brave fielders!!!! His 25 came in decent time and included six fours and a lonely one. Luke was becalmed at the other end and Clark soon joined him and shortly overtook him. Some big shots saw Baxter pass 50, although he was out shortly afterwards chasing a wide one. Luke continued along his merry way, before and after the rain break, and despite the loss of Jamie for 5, Sappo (with the aid of Bear running for him) and Luke saw us home, Luke finishing on 67 not out with an over to spare.
