Stevenage v Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Sunday XI on Sun 18 Apr 2010 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Lost 5 wickets

Match report A very disappointing start to the 2010 season from the ASPs, and the sort of showing D:Ream were thinking of when they wrote their 1997 (might have been ’95 or even ‘96, I am not in the mood to check) smash hit “Things can only get better”. Only Ben Surrey and Si Lindsay came out of the game with any real credit although Tanky and Wardy did bowl well. If we are to succeed this season work is required on all three areas of the game.

A beautiful day weatherwise welcomed us to Stevenage CC, and upon winning the toss and working out the operation of the electronic scoreboard, ASP were ready to bat. Sadly Bear was back in the pavilion all too quickly having dragged one on. Bert Devonshire managed to get a couple of nice shots away to the fence but sadly within the blink of any eye the ASPs were four down, Groom and Luke departing for a combined score of 1. Some middle order hitting from Si Lindsay who showed some good patience brought him 25 runs and little cameos from Lew Robbo (10) and Clark (8) threatened to get ASPs back in the hunt. Sadly, continued tight bowling from the young Stevenage bowlers left the ASPs at 82 for 9 with the departures of Wardy and Tank. At various points the skipper had hoped for 100 but this now looked unlikely. However, a brave battling display from Ben, including a first ball straight on his new boot, meant that provided BC could hang about maybe 100 was on. It wasn’t like the overs weren’t there to be used!!!!! In the end, that we got to 106 all out was a decent tail-wagging effort and if they had cut the grass at mid on it would have been 108. Skipper BC ending on 15 not out when Bennys vigil (2) ended after good resistance.

With tea despatched in typical style it was ASPs bowlers turn. Despite early rustiness from Tank and Si, they soon found a nice rhythm and both took wickets, Tanks second with a very good catch on the rebound by Ben at square leg. With both bowlers rested after seven overs apiece, Bear and Wardy took up the mantle and, despite the odd well struck four and the odd misfiled, also managed good control and both were unlucky not to pick up more than the one wicket each owing to a couple of drops, as was Ben who also bowled well and picked up a victim. Sadly a dreadful over from BC right at the death cost any chance of victory and the innings was ended in farce next over with overthrows followed by 5 penalty runs for the ball hitting the helmet positioned behind keeper Groom.

Hopefully this is as bad as it gets and people will get one decent showing in next weekend as the league starts in under two weeks.
