Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Sunday XI v Nazeing Common 2nds on Sun 25 Apr 2010 at 1.30pm
Match was Abandoned
Match report
ASPs game on Sunday was the meat in a rain sandwich, which sadly reached a rather soggy conclusion half way through the second innings.
As is common these days it seems, both skippers attempted to contrive the toss, but rather unhelpfully both wanted the same outcome, ie to be in the field first. NZ2 looking to play to their bowling strength and ASPs looking to have a go at chasing a total. In the end BC was the happier as the coin came down tails, and ASPs took their places in the field.
The potential league change pair of Clumpers and Tank got straight in a groove and looked to be enjoying their work. Early reward up the hill for Tank wasn’t replicated by Luke from the top end, a couple of chances going to hand but not sticking. When both had finished their spells Tank had his 3 wickets (3-12) whilst the Gay Sailor had rather unluckily gone wicketless. The introduction of “the little man” and Clark and the belief of their only real batsman that he was “in” upped the scoring rate and for the first time the fielders were placed under pressure. Both bowlers created a chance but sadly neither could be taken. However, at this stage of the season, overs under your belt are key for the battles to come. The last two bowlers to come into the attack, BC and Si-Li, also needed overs but for very different reasons. BC, yet to find any sort of form with ball in hand, picked up a couple (2-28) including an excellent slip catch by Baxter, whilst Si-Li continued his good early season form also with 2-28. After the conclusion of 40 overs, the ASPs left the field quite pleased with their work in restricting NZ2 to under 180.
So we had our wish to chase, we had a decent batting line up, initially we had sunshine, we had a target to test yet not out of reach. What could go wrong. Rain. Anyway, having made a solid start with the returning Bingo (29 (runs not age)) at the top of the order with Bert, ASP were right in line to secure the first victory of the season. Bert was looking both solid but also scoring regularly and even once Bingo had departed, Lew Robbo, Neil and lastly Luke (12*) kept the rate where it needed to be. However, with clouds looming, a curtailed game started looking more and more likely and almost immediately after drinks had been taken, the second bout of rain forced and early finish. ASPs were well on course having just passed 100 for only 3 down of which Bert had 44*.
