Barley v Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team on Sat 07 May 2022 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Lost By 52 runs

Match report 10 men Asps took the short trip to Barley for their 2nd game of the league season.

Baxter won the toss and after the rain, decided to field. The rapid Steel opened along with swinger Surrey. Steel bowled sharp and beat the bat on a couple of occasions, he found the edge twice but the edges didn't find fielders hands, instead they raced off to the boundary. Surrey had the ball moving and after a steady start, the Barley openers started to find their range, the very short boundary on one side was their target. Surrey was clipped into that boundary a few times, another outfield and they were just singles. Ricketts replaced Steel and R. Fitzgerald replaced Surrey. With both openers in they pounced on everything too short and everything too full, mainly straight to the small boundary. Smart batting saw both openers reach 50 in quick succession. Albon was back for the Asps and was the man to get the breakthrough. A fine nick through to keeper Baxter saw Asps get their first wicket with the score at 150-1. Steel returned and cleaned up number 3 for a duck. Albon then had his second when Barley skipper tried to hit to the small boundary but completley missing, he was stumped by Baxter for not many. Asps had a foothold in the game but too many extras and some clever batting saw Barley score runs consistently. Albon picked up his 3rd before finishing a good comeback spell and a 3 for. R. Fitzgerald finished off down the hill and picked up 3 quick wickets, a stumping by Baxter, a second good catch by Vincent and a bowled. Ricketts and Surrey finished off down the hill. Surrey especially unlucky not to walk away with a wicket or two and a better economy. Barley carried on their assault and finished 251/8. A tough score to chase with 11 let alone 10.

A new opening partnership of Steel and McNamara got off to a bad start with Steel being bowled in the first over. Fitzgerald smashed a 6 and four, but was then caught on the boundary for 11. Asps off to a bad start with the bat at 13/2. The classy Vincent and solid McNamara started building an innings and finding the gaps with some lovely shots. McNamara was finding regular singles and Vincent played some classical drives and cuts for 4. The partnership rattled along to 50 and both batsmen looked set. Vincent hitting several quality shots, including a straight drive right out the middle of the bat. McNamara played some cracking front foot drives of his own. The partnership was giving Asps a hope but once it reached 104, Vincent was cruelly bowled for his Asps highest score of 45. Vincent deserved 50 and was unfortunate not to get there. McNamara was joined briefly by Worby who had some serious pad rash after watching the 25 over partnership from Vincent and McNamara. Worby didn't last long and Morrissey was soon in the middle. It didn't take long before the quick Right arm seamer got Morrissey with a full straight delivery and the home team were on a roll. Surrey was next in and Baxter was quickly in aswell when McNamara went for a very good 39. With 10 an over needed in the last 10 overs Baxter found the leg side gaps to the short boundary and Surrey one of his own. Surrey sadly couldn't repeat his heroics of last week and hauled out for 5. Albon and Baxter couldn't hit the boundary regularly enough to threaten the remaining target, but both played some good shots. Albon finding the gap through cover and Baxter flicking through leg to the boundary, it looked like Asps could make maximum batting points at 200 but the opening quick was back on and Albon chopped on for 9. Last man Ricketts hit 2 before he was yorked in the 2nd to last over and Asps 199 all out and picking up 8 points.

Special mention to all 10 men of Asps team. Its never easy to play 1 short and to hit 199 is something to be proud of. As was the team spirit, the effort and hard work all the way through. It was great to see on a tough day.

Jakey Vincent with a new high score for the Asps was brilliant as was McNamara, along with their 100 partnership.

We have Cambridge NCI 3rds at home next week.
