Match report Match report Stevenage

The 2017 season kicked off with Aspenden all together, fielding in the rain in Stevenage. The familiar sight of Ward and Albon opened the bowling. The less said about the early season fielding the better. 3 dropped catches in the first 10 overs was not a great start.. One of the drops from Surrey, turned into a fantastic run out from a direct hit. Albon bowled well, beating the opening bat time after time & should of had him out caught but for another drop. Another tough chance at point was put down off Ward leaving him frustrated with figures of 8 overs 32 runs. A nice start to the season for Ward though. Albon bowled tight & for run outs.. leaving him figures of 8-3-19-0. Pleasingly economical for the skipper. Curtis & Surrey both came on first change either end. Surrey struggled with line and length initially and was put away a few times by the opener and hard hitting number 3. Curtis also took some
punishment from both batsmen who were latching onto anything slightly wide. Clifton put an end to the catching catastrophe taking the opener at midwicket, off Curtis. Surrey then cleaned up number 3 with a perfect Yorker onto leg stump. He picked up another after Curtis took a one handed pearler at gully to end Surreys spell with 2-49. Gifford, asps new all rounder replaced Surrey and Curtis finished off with another two wickets, ending 3-49. Baxter replaced Curtis and there was spin from both ends. Baxter picked one up LBW in his first whilst Gifford had a chance dropped from what would of been a stunner from Clifton on the boundary. He was rewarded when he drew the batsmen out and N. Curtis took a nice stumping to give Gifford 6-0-1-29. Baxter picked up two late ones with catches from Clifton and I. Curtis, bowling a wicket maiden last over giving him 3 for 21. Much better end than start from the Asps.

The reply started with Clifton and Ward striding to the middle. A positive start saw Clifton hit an early boundary and Ward 2 big hits over midwicket for 4. Ward fell in the same over after chipping one to cover. One of Asps overseas internationals Green came in at 4. He looked good and was building a partnership with the free scoring Clifton. Green was also caught at cover after smashing one to the fielder who stuck a hand out to nap a great catch. N. Curtis joined Clifton and watched as Clifton flicked 3 fours in an over. Curtis got in the action and hit some nice shots of his own. A 50 partnership was bought up but ended soon after when Curtis was bowled for a well made 19. Clifton was past 50 and seeing it like a balloon when he was joined by Albon. Both batsmen played Stevenage's best bowler well, with Albon cutting him 4 times in 2 overs through gully. Clifton took on the other bowler and deposited him back over his twice and smashed through cover in quick succession. With Asps needing 70 off the last 10, Albon was bowled for 13 and the Asps run chase was fading. Clifton was still going strong and batting partner Gifford looked solid early on and played arguably the shot of the day with a exquisite cover drive for 4. Sadly he was bowled for 4 and Baxter was caught first ball when edging to slip who palmed it to second slip. I. Curtis joined Clifton who was into the 90's. Clifton soon reached the magical 100 and a great start for the league skipper. With 28 off 2 overs needed, Clifton was bowled trying to heave over midwicket. Curtis fell just before and it was left for Ward to block out the penultimate over and Strange to come in and hammer 4 fours on the final over leaving Asps 188/9. A website draw.......

Special mention for Ian's one handed catch, Albies cover drive and Clifton starting the year with a ton.
