Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team v North Weald on Sat 23 Apr 2016 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Lost by 5 Wickets

Match report ASPCC Started the 2016 season with a home game against North Weald. On a damp, overcast day Asps were to bat first. A brand new wicket awaited the familiar partnership of Jabar & Clifton to opening the innings. The wicket was playing well but inevitably slow but both batsmen dealt with it well. Jabar smashed his way to 38 with 3 monster 6’s, before he was undone by the slowness of the wicket when he drove back at the bowler and was caught. Clifton had got himself in and was now joined by the returning Sapsford, who looked solid from the first ball. Both batsmen played their own game with Sapsford hitting some beautiful drives for 4 and Clifton picking up quick singles and the occasional boundary. With the scoreboard ticking along nicely Sapsford’s innings was ended on 33 when he clipped one off the middle but straight to midwicket. Baxter joined Clifton and soon after Clifton hit his 50 and retired not out. A good start for the ASPCC skipper. Leaver came out to the crease and found the middle straight away when he smacked the North Weald spinner through midwicket for 4 then 3 more in the over. Sadly when he pushed forward and the ball slid between bat and pad the keeper took a good stumping chance to dismiss Leaver for 7. Devonshire looked to start where he left off last season coming in next, he was out for just 1 though when he was undone by a good Yorker. Next in at 7 was Potter. Potter and Baxter put on a steady partnership to get the Asps back on track. Both men hitting 4’s and Potter with some big hits over the boundary line. Baxter was then bowled trying to run a ball down to the boundary. Groom was next up and with 4 overs left, Potter went big again and brought up his 50. Moor replaced Potter when he retired and was adjudged LBW for 1. With 1 ball left Fitzgerald hit a single leaving him 1* and Groom 4*. With most the Asps batsmen getting some time at the crease.

North Weald came out looking to knock off the 206 that Aspenden had posted. It started well for the openers Fitzgerald & the ever improving Surrey. Both creating chances that the Asps fielders couldn’t take. With both openers bowling out and hugely unfortunate not to take a wicket between them, North weald were left 55-0 off 20 overs. Devonshire came on down the hill and Sapsford up, it started well for both, when each of them picked up a wicket. With 2 new batsmen at the crease and 150 off 20 overs needed, both started to go big. One of which took a liking to Sapsford’s bowling, taking him or a couple of maximums. When Leaver replaced Devonshire, the batsmen were settled and ready for a big chase. With a small straight boundary, leaver was punished for anything that was slightly off line and deposited into the trees. With Potter also getting some tap at the other end when the Batsmen were throwing their arms at everything. A couple of late wickets for Potter and Leaver and the big hitting North Weald batsmen retiring for a brutal 50, it looked like the game was back in the balance. That was soon dismissed then the new batsmen came in and finished the game off with the first ball of the last over by smashing it for 6. A bad day in the field for the ASPS but a good run out none the less.

Special mention for Surrey’s 8 overs for 12 runs and Devonshire also bowled very well picking up 1-28 off his 8. Clifton & Potter also hitting 50’s.
