Hatley & Arrington v Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Sunday XI on Sun 19 Aug 2012 at 2pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Lost by 2 wickets

Match report Asps travelled upto the land that time forgot at Hatley. After turning up at half 1, immediately the rain started. After a quick 15 minute shower, Skipper for the day Devonshire lost the toss and Asps were put into bat. Devonshire choose to open with Pankhurst and Green, Pankhurst having fond memories of getting his first 50 for Asps in this fixture last year. Green got off to a cracking start, drilling two boundaries in the first two overs. Pankhurst was setting himself up for a long innings, showing the patience and concentration that was needed. Green lasted another couple of overs before he was bowled by a ball that just kept low. Devonshire in at 3 absolutely creamed one straight back to the bowler who plucked it and Devonshire's short stay for 1 was over. Things went from bad to worse when Grace was given LBW first ball. Baxter then joined Pankhurst, with the bowler on a hattrick. Baxter managed to keep it out, then hit a four next ball. Pankhurst was off the mark in the 9th over, squeezing the ball through cover for one. Baxter carried on trying to score quick runs, and with the luck of a couple of edges, Baxter and Pankhurst took Asps upto 50-3 from 12-3. A good recovery, Pankhurst was keeping the bowlers out and picking up runs where he could. Baxter hit a couple more boundaries before he top edged to cover and was out for a decent 33. Asps were now 74-4 with alot of work to do to give the bowlers something to bowl at. N. Curtis was in at 6 and felt the same misery as Grace when he top edged his first ball trying to sweep and was caught. Strange came out to try lift Asps upto something respectable. Pankhurst continued to nudge and nurdle. Strange hit a couple of lovely cuts for 4, before he also got one that stayed low and he was bowled for 22. I. Curtis was in next, hoping not to fall the same as his Dad earlier in the day. He didn't and he was pushing the ball around for singles. Unfortunately young Curtis was caught for 7. Albon joined Pankhurst with his 'new' county slogging bat. Pankhurst played a couple of lovely pull shots in his innings, and after another one, he got caught in two minds and popped the ball upto square leg for a sensible 39. Ward and Albon were now in, Albon managing to find the middle of the bat and hitting the ball nicely. Ward was doing his best to get Albon on strike and when he did, Albon smashed a sweep shot beautifully through midwicket for four. Ward was bowled for a good 7, Surrey came out to face the last two balls of the innings and came charging down the wicket first ball, edging it into his toes. No mistake with the second ball though, when Surrey drilled it through mid wicket for four. Surrey 4* and Albon a good 18*. Asps ending on 170, thanks to alot of extras.

After a quick stroll to the village hall for teas, Asps got their defence under way. Albon and Ward started the bowling off. Albon Got some turn and bounce from the start and was bowling nicely. Ward getting it to jump off a length and then really bowling full at the stumps, giving the batsmen problems. After dropping one off Albon, Devonshire made no mistake when he picked up a catch off Ward. Ward carried on his good work, as did Albon. N. Curtis kept well behind the stumps all day, and was in the action early on with a great quick stumping off Albon's bowling, and then again in Ward's next over. Ward also picked up another one leaving Hatley and Arrington 5 down after 16 overs. Albon 8-1-23-2 and Ward 8-0-3-33. A great start by the opening pair, on again another very hot day. Surrey came on down the hill and I. Curtis up the hill. the two youngsters bowling well in tandem with eachother. After dropping to many down leg side, Surrey got one to pitch on off and keep its line and the batsman edged to Baxter for a sharp catch at slip. Curtis was then soon reward with a wicket of his own, and well deserved too. Surrey bowled 4-1-12-1 and was replaced by Baxter who kept things tight in the first over by bowling a maiden. Pankhurst then took over from Curtis. With Pankhurst on 198 wickets for the Asps and three wickets to take, everyone was hoping he could do it. His chance was slimmed when Asps got a run out. Baxter was bowling well from the top but couldn't get a wicket. Pankhurst was also bowling well, but with the two lower order batsmen swinging from the hip and 30 needed off 6 overs, H & A slogged their way to victory, winning with a big six off the last over. Baxter bowling 0-41 off 8 and Pankhurst 0-28 off 6.1 overs. A good game that Asps very much should of won, if it wasn't for a couple of batsmen chancing their arm at the end and it paying off. Unlucky Boys.
