Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Sunday XI v Bayford on Sun 13 May 2012 at 2pm
Match was Drawn

Match report A lovely day in Aspenden saw highs and lows for the Asps on Sunday. Bayford were put into bat on a slow, damp wicket. Pankhurst and Nash shared the new ball, Pankhurst coming down the hill bowled some beautiful deliveries to the Bayford openers. Nash at the other end couldn’t find his radar in his first few overs, but managed to pull it back and got into his stride to pick him self up a wicket ct Albon at Mid Wicket. Pankhurst still plugging away will be wondering how he didn't take any wickets after 3 dropped catches off his bowling. Nash ended on 1-22 off his 6 and Pankhurst extremely unfortunate to finish up 0-24 off his 8. The ball magnet Clifton was in the thick of it the whole way through Bayford innings it seemed. Unfortunate not to pluck one of his hard chances out. Surrey replaced Nash up the hill and has started showing some real maturity in his bowling. He beat the bat more than once and was rewarded with 1-29 off his 7, unlucky not to have another after Baxter dropped a quick chance at gully. Ward bowled consistently and varied his pace well, not giving the batsmen any room to get him away. Finishing up with 0-30 off his 8, a very good spell for no reward. After Surrey had finished up the hill, Albon brought him self on, hoping to break a partnership and chip away at Bayfords batsmen. He managed to get the wicket, bowling the batsmen middle stump. Albon then bowled some absolute beauties to the new left-hander but couldn't quite get his wicket. A caught and bowled chance then went down off Albon, A very rare sight. Bayford were trying to pile of the runs and managed to take a few off Albons last couple of overs, which left him with 1-36 off 8. Baxter then turned his arm and got slapped to all parts, managing to pick up a wicket ct by Pankhurst at cover, ending with 1-23 off 2. Grace bowled a nice last over, 0-8. Bayford setting a competitive target of 180.

After Tea, R.Devonshire & Clifton walked to crease looking ready for the challenge. Devonshire got his eye in and watched the first over carefully looking solid on defense. In the second over of the innings Clifton got a ball brush past his bat going down leg, Bayford went up and Clifton walked on 0, ending a frustrating day for the league captain. Big blow for Asps looking at chasing a challenging 180. Grace came to the wicket and after some good net session's looked confident in his approach, until he got one that stayed low and took his bails. Devonshire was joined by Strange in the middle, looking to build a partnership. Strange wasn't timing in to start with and when he did it seemed to find a fielder. Devonshire meanwhile found the middle of the bat frequently and the boundary consistently, hitting some lovely looking drives, and what is turning into his signature shot, the huge straight drive. Both batsmen were rotating strike and picking up singles wherever they could with some good running. With Devonshire on 49* (and he knew it) the nerves almost kicked in when a leading edge just about dropped safely. Waiting for 2 more overs until he got strike again, Devonshire knocked his way to 50 to a big round of applause for his maiden 50 of the season and second of many more for the ASPS. Unfortunately Devonshire could only add 6 more before being caught for an impressive 56, and an equally impressive 80 partnership with Strange. Strange who was going along nicely, was joined by Baxter for his first knock of the season. Needing about 100 off about 15 overs. They started well, finding the gaps and collecting the singles. Baxter chanced his arm and managed to hit a couple of boundaries. Strange kicked on and hit a beautiful 6 over midwicket off the Bayford quick bowler. Baxter attempted the same shot but only picked up four (and it didn't look as elegant as Strange's). With 75 off ten needed, Baxter hit a 6 over long on and the game looked like it could be won by the Asps. Strange was then bowled for a well-worked 52, and his first half-century of the 2012 season. Another good partnership of 47. Baxter fell two overs after also being bowled for a decent 28. This left it to Nash & Curtis to keep Asps run rate up, but after Curtis was caught for 1 and Nash run out for 3, the task seemed a lot harder. Some attempted big hitting from Pankhurst and Albon failed to come off and after Albon hit a lovely looking straight drive for 4 he was bowled trying to heave one over midwicket. Pankhurst ended on 7* and Surrey 1*. A decent first home game for Aspenden, but they will be looking to improve in the coming weeks.
