Stevenage Friendly v Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Sunday XI on Sun 17 Apr 2011 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won by 8 wickets
Match report
The ASPs got the 2011 season off in sensational style against Stevenage on Sunday, in an exact role reversal from one year previous. Upon losing the toss, the ASPs were given first use of the (poor quality Herts League) ball and it was Andrew “The Power” Taylor and Mark “Tanky” Pankhurst who were getting it to talk early doors. Both took wickets in their second overs whilst maintaining a wonderful stranglehold and when they were removed at the ten over point they had figures of 5-5-0-2 and 5-2-3-1 respectively. Next to try their luck were Paul “Gok Wan” Ward and Ben “Teabag” Surrey and they too kept a tight control over the home sides scoring rate with the added bonus of a couple of wickets to Gok, and a run out coming from an athletic piece of fielding from Ben “Sapnav” Sapsford. Some lusty late hitting from the Stevenage lower middle order pushed the scoring rate along but a further run out, along with two wickets from John “BC” Albon and a first for the club from Jaimie “Jamois” Grace, meant a sub 100 total always giving the ASPs a chance.
So after tea we set off in pursuit of 92 to win with the charge being led by Saturday skipper Luke (too many to quote) Clifton and Michael “Bearskiboo” Strange. Tight bowling and first game nerves led to a circumspect start but runs were coming and the opening pair looked in no trouble. However, Bear lofted a catch to mid-off and Luke flayed one to slip to leave the ASPs two down with under 40 on the board. Any thoughts the home side may have had of pushing a victory were dashed however by the aggressive batting of ASPs numbers 3 and 4 (Matt “Fred West” Nash and Sapnav) and the speed they took us to victory surprised even seasoned Nash watchers!!!! He was to remain unbeaten on 33 leaving Sapnav to hit the winning runs through the square leg boundary.
