Furneaux Pelham v Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Sunday XI on Sun 09 May 2010 at 2pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Lost 52 runs

Match report Disappointing, not Grease, is the word. In a tale of woe reminiscent of 2009, the ASP’s managed to lose a game that they could, maybe should, have won. After driving down the longest driveway of any cricket club in England (if not the world), a very green track greeted the early arrivals at the otherwise very picturesque Furneux Pelham ground.

With clouds all around, although mercifully reticent to empty their contents on us, it seemed an obvious decision to get first use of the new ball and juicy track. So when the coin came down a head, skipper Albon waited in fear for FP’s captain Bonner to say “we’ll have a bowl”. Thankfully he decided to lead from the front and bat.

Clumpers started us off down the hill but struggled early on with his length (?) dropping several outside off stump to be put away but also taking a wicket with a huge full toss. Tank also started off with a couple of fours being taken from him, but as usual found good areas quickly, and settled in for his spell (1-29). SiLi replaced Luke down the hill and almost immediately got the ball talking. Probably the only bowler to give Bonner (82) problems, including having him dropped in the 30’s, a great effort went unrewarded. It was in this period of the game that Jamie Grace introduced himself to the ASP’s in good style, with a direct hit run out from cover. Wickets fell in fairly regular intervals after drinks (Ward 2-29, Albon 2-29, and Surrey 3-31) but sadly for the away side Bonner kept finding gaps in the field until he was finally out caught behind cutting one from Albon that bounced a touch.

Two moments of note in the field, both prompting much laughter. A huge 6 denting the wing of the Bentley the owner thought was safely hidden behind the pavilion, and Lew Robbo taking what was a very good catch on the boundary.

180 didn’t look a huge ask for what was on paper a strong ASPs batting line-up and indeed they went off like a train reaching 50 in no time. Sadly we were then four down in no time losing openers Bear (23) and Lew Robbo (24 comprising solely of 4’s) and then Luke (1) and Jamie (2). Baxter and Neil set about a recovery and at the half way stage we were up with the required rate but both fell in quick succession, for 25 and 24 respectively, and with them the chances of win probably ended. Contributions of 6 each from SiLi and BC weren’t going to get us there, and despite Tank battling gamely with the bowlers and himself he was left stranded on 2 when Ben (0) and Wardy (1) succumbed to end the game with ASP’s 129 all out.
