Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team v Little Hallingbury on Sat 24 Jul 2004 at 1.30
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won 4 wickets
Match report
A remarkable match was clinched off the penultimate ball as ASP successfully chased down 276. ASP got off to a good start with Stewart being well held off the bowling of Simon Lindsay for a duck and Robinson falling for 9 to leae Hallingbury on 27-2. A fine innings of 46 from Cummings was ended by a scintallating catch from Lindsay on the square leg boundary and with Phipps being bowled by Albon Hallingbury were struggling at 78-4. A hundred run partnership between McCraith and Waheed started to take the game away from ASP as they both made fifties. Going into the last 2 overs Hallingbury were 224-8 but an amazing 54 runs came off the last 12 balls as they smashed their way to 276-8. A thouroughly downcast ASP enjoyed a fine tea and then set out to chase the total down. ASP lost their first wicket at 34 when Thompson was caught on the boundary for 14. Simon Groom came in and after scoring 2 runs off his first 14 balls then proceeded to smash 49 runs off his next 21 balls before falling to Waheed, his innings containing 1 four and 6 sixes. Strange soon reached his 50 off 82 balls but a clatter of wickets at the other end left ASP struggling on 157-5. ASP soon lost Williams for 8 to leave themselves 193-6 with 9.2 overs left. This bought skipper Jonathan Moon to the crease and with nothing to lose he and Strange set about scoring the 10 an over needed. This was done with a balance of singles and boundaries as Hallingbury had virtually every man on the fence. ASP needed 3 off the last over and when Strange hit Izzard for 4 off the 5th ball ASP had recorded a monumental victory. Strange finished with 139* off 143 balls and Moon finished with 31* off 20 balls
