Birchanger v Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Saturday League Team on Sat 29 Apr 2017 at 1.30pm
Aspenden Standon & Puckeridge Won By 8 Wickets

Match report Asps seeked some payback in their last friendly before the league, against last season’s foe Birchanger. They had beaten us once last year and tied after they took a hattrick in the away fixture.

Asps were asked to bowl and skipper Jabar handed the new ball to Surrey and Devonshire. The match started perfectly for Asps when Surrey for a second week in a row removed the opener for a golden duck. Surrey was bowling some great lines to the remaining opener, swinging it away from the lefty and back into the right hander. The bowling performance of the day was coming at the other end though. Devonshire was steaming in and hitting just back of a length consistently. The pressure showed when number 3 hoicked one to cover for an easy catch. Devonshire was causing every batsmen problems and they started falling in quick succession. Surrey was leaking nothing the other end and had 2 close LBW shouts. Devonshire was bowling back to back maidens and was rewarded with two more quick wickets from some unplayable deliveries and one at the end of his spell to end up with the top figures of 10-5-13-4. Surrey was unfortunate not to pick up another in his 1-17 off 8 overs. The opening bowlers had torn the game away from Birchanger and it was left to Strange to spin the remaining batsmen out. R. Fitz bowled line and length the other end, the batsmen knowing they need some runs on the board at 50-5, took to Fitz and chanced their arm hitting a couple of boundaries in his 5 overs for 25. The classy Strange had already picked up 2, helped by some top fielding and catching from the Aspenden boys. It wasn’t long before Strange had snared two more on his way to 5-1-14-4. The innings was finished off with Jabar and Baxter combining to quickly run out the last batsmen. Birchanger had posted 94 A/O, mainly down to some fantastic bowling from Strange and Devonshire, backed up by good fielding.

After Tea the returning Moor joined Jabar at the crease. It wasn’t long before Moor hit the shot of the day when he effortlessly cover drive a beautiful 6. Jabar looked solid and just looked for some time in the middle. Moor had looked good but was bowled for 15, when he played around the straight one off the first bowling change. Ward, who had hit big runs at Birchanger last season didn’t disappoint. Ward walked in and the field walked out. It didn’t take long for Ward to take a liking to the medium pacer, depositing him high and long over mid-wicket and straight back over the bowlers head. Jabar just knocking the singles, playing himself into form, looked good the other end but the focus was on Wards big striking. After smashing one into a car with a huge 6, Ward had bought up a rapid 50 and had near enough wrapped the game up. He was caught just after from a good running catch in the field. R. Fitz 1* joined Jabar 20* and the pair finished the game off without incident. A good run out before the season opener at Hockeril next week.

Special mention to Devonshire & Strange’s top bowling effort and Wards quick fire 53.
