Match report Match Report
Theydon Bois (A) – 12th August

A 10 man Asps team, missing the skipper Clifton, the Fitzgerlad lads & Surrey, travelled down to bottom of the league Theydon Bois.

After the last 3 weeks had all been abandoned or cancelled due to rain, it was nice to see the sun shining.

Skipper Jabar lost the toss and Asps bowled first. After his wedding and 5 weeks not playing, Devonshire was handed the new ball along with K. Ward. Devonshire took a few overs to find a good length, his short balls were being punished by the TB opener. Ward bowled well but his pace came off the bat nicely and he was crashed to the boundary a few times. Devonshire got the breakthrough and Ward was replaced by P. Ward. Wardy bowled with control and into good areas. Devonshire bowled a tidy 8 overs 1 for 24, a good comeback. Strange was into the attack and caused problems immediately. By the time Strange was into his 4th over he already had 2 wickets, One of which was a fantastic catch from K. Ward on the boundary. Sapsford was on for Wardy and he bowled tightly. Some big turn halted the free flowing runs along with Strange picking up 3 more in his 10 overs, including a good stumping from Curtis & bowling TB’s skipper round his legs. Strange bowled 10-1-22-5, his second 5 wicket haul against TB this season, overall figures of 17.5-4-42-10. Amazing stuff from the Bear. P. Ward finished off with Sappo and Wardy was rewarded with a beautiful nick behind and catch from Curtis, who was standing up. Wardy picked up his second when TB’s last bat smeared one in the air to long on and Devonshire done the rest.

A great turnaround from the Asps boys after TB were 120-1 to 168 A/O.

Tea was followed by a new opening pair of Moor & Jabar in the absence of Clifton. Both batsmen got off to quick starts. Moor finding the straight boundary twice in quick succession. Jabar looked as good as ever. Anything slightly short was smashed over midwicket and anything too full was dispatched with class through the covers. A good start was over when Moor was caught for well made 22. Next in was K. Ward, he hit the ball hard from the get go. Jabar just stood and watched Ward smash the ball to all parts, including some great drives, in just 5 overs. Sadly Ward toed one and was caught for 32. A top knock which put Asps in a hugely commanding position. Baxter joined Jabar at 4. Baxter only had to stand and admire the controlled demolition at the other end! Jabar bought up his 50 and Baxter just kept him on strike. Jabar was up to another 50 and soon crashed 4 sixes after. With the game as good as won, TB skipper challenged Jabar.. He stuck 4 men onto the cow corner boundary and bought on his loopy bowler, Jabar obliged and hammered the first ball for 6 over the fielder’s head! Jabar finished it off next ball with a 4, leaving him on 97*. A fantastic knock once again. Baxter ending 8* and part of a 70 partnership of which Jabar scored 59 of them!

Special mention to Neil Curtis, Paul Ward & Ben Sapsford for making themselves available to play. Also to Strange’s bowling masterclass & Jabar’s batting masterclass! Also to a 9 man Theydon Bois team, who gave it everything and are generally a top bunch of blokes. With a few beers enjoyed together afterwards.

That win now confirms Asps will stay in Div 1 for the 2018 seaosn.

Next week sees ASPCC host league leaders and likely league winners Nazeing Common.
