Hockerill CC

Venue - ACG

Aspenden welcomed old rivals Hockerill to the green on Saturday. Asps were in the field first. The regular sight of L. Fitzgerald and Surrey opened up. Hockerill got off to a flyer. Finding the boundary with regularity. They gave no chances and soon the 100 partnership was up. It took
Albon to take a very sharp caught and bowled to get the breakthrough. Things looked good when Albon picked up number 3 first ball with a plum LBW. 100-0 too 100-2 in two balls. R. Fitz bowled well but the remaining left handed opener swung to the trees on anything short. He was flying and brought up 100 quickly. Strange replaced Albon and picked up the lefty for 117. A great knock and a equally great catch from Clifton to get his wicket. Strange then picked up number 4, which included another good Clifton catch. With 200 on the board, Hockerill's lower order wagged, they hit big boundaries and quick runs. Surrey and L. Fitz returned to pick up 5 wickets between them including 3 from Surrey, a good come back spell. Hockerill finishing on a challenging 255 All Out.

A fantastic tea from Hayley, was followed by Clifton and Jabar out to bat. Jabar hit a beautiful cover drive but sadly played on in the 2nd over for 6. Ward came in at 3 and was solid from the start. Clifton was finding himself against the sharp and outswing of Lane. Lane bowling tidy maidens... he was replaced down the hill and Clifton tried to free his arms and hit the new bowler over cover, sadly Clifton edged to gully and was out for 6. That brought in R. Fitz. Ward was going well and with Asps 76/2 he had 50. Both batsmen looked comfortable but and ball that was borderline no ball went in favour of the fielding team and Ward skied it to get caught for a top innings of 69. Moor was next but after last weeks 100, it wasn't to be his day when he was cleaned up for 1 off a quick ball from the spinner. Baxter was next at 6. R. Fitz was striking the ball beautifully now. With the field set back he still frond the boundaries. Baxter was just swing to cow every ball with 11 an over needed. The pressure was on Hockerill and they dropped Baxter twice. With quick runs being scored it was a devastating blow to lose Fitz for 58. After just hitting the shot of the day, a huge straight drive for 6, he tried it again but it didn't get the elevation and he was caught on the boundary. Worby joined Baxter but Baxter was stumped for 22. Worby was caught behind for 1. L. Fitz came in and hit 19 in not time, including 2 fours and a cracking 6, but he also was caught going for the boundary. Surrey was caught by long of for 0. Albon and Strange batted out till the end with Albon striking a great 4 down square leg to give Asps full batting and bowling points in a loss of 55 runs.

Special mention to two good knocks from Ward and R. Fitz (who also bowl well without reward) and Albon for hitting the last ball for 4.

Next week sees Aspenden travel to Matching Green.
